Okay, thank you for the pointers! :)
I will keep an eye out for larger, redder combs and waddles in two weeks or so. Wow, a crowing chick?! That must've been pretty funny, and cute!
I bought 5 chicks in the beginning of March from a source that guarantees 90% of them be hens. They are about one month old now and are growing fast! This is my third year raising chicks, and every year I have gotten them from this same source. So far, I have never gotten a rooster, or male...
The pad really seems like the way to go! It just makes more sense. I have always been worried the lamp was too hot. Your description is a very good gauge while I still have the lamp. I will keep an eye on them to see where they are most comfortable.
Thanks!
debid,
I do have a 250W bulb :/ Just bought a new one today becuase the red wore off of our old one. These comments are all very enlightening. I had no idea chicks didn't need to be under a super warm light and could be so hardy without a lamp. I have moved the lamp farther away from them and...
This is great advice! :) Thank you for being so thorough!
Others suggested that maybe the brooder is too hot and she might not have a spot to cool down. I have moved the thermometer to the outskirts to check for temp. and will move the light around to accommodate a cool spot.
As far as...

Amber Whites, Buff Orpingtons and Barred Plymouth Rocks have been the chicks I raised the last two years, but today my...
Hello and thank you for the welcome! :)
I will continue with the electrolyte mixture and try to find an eyedropper to better hydrate her with. Thank you both for the advice!
Sorry to have posted this in the New Member Forum! I am new to BackyardChickens, and am waiting for the site to...
Hello,
We got five chicks today from Southern States, each a different breed--so they were in different brooders. Our Welsummer is not doing so good, or at least I think she looks a little under the weather despite looking healthy at the store. We just got them home and all set up about 3 or 4...
