    Fresh Wood Chips

I disagree with this. If you add sand to an already muddy run, you'll be throwing away your money and make more work for yourself in the end. I have wood chips in half my garden where the chickens love to scratch (they are entertained by the bugs and scratch hiding under woodchips and usually...

    The Sussex thread!

Oh I really hope you are right! We only had two hicks hatch under our first broody and it looks like they may both be pullets! We can't have roosters.

    The Sussex thread!

Can anyone take a guess at this chick's gender? I believe it is a coronation sussex (but was a mystery egg from a breeder w/ different sussexes and breeding projects happening). Its 6 1/2 weeks old.

6 1/2 Weeks Old Barnevelder and Sussex - Are We Roos? - UPDATED PICS

No guesses from anybody yet? We're now at 6 1/2 weeks so I'm adding some new pictures. Would appreciate any feedback on their sex! Dark one we suspect to be a Silver Barnevelder. And the light one we suspect is a Coronation Sussex. Its comb was the first to appear - at about 1 wk - among...

6 1/2 Weeks Old Barnevelder and Sussex - Are We Roos? - UPDATED PICS

I emailed the breeder who thinks that the light colored one is most likely a Corronation Sussex and the dark one is a Silver Barnevelder. He didn't make any guesses on gender though. Any ideas - anyone?

6 1/2 Weeks Old Barnevelder and Sussex - Are We Roos? - UPDATED PICS

Hello friends! I hope you can help me identify our two little fuzz balls that our broody hatched about 4.5 weeks ago from eggs we purchased from a local breeder. The breeder didn't know what egg combinations he gave us (they were from a mixed pen) but he has Ameraucana (Blue/Wheaten)...

    Bay Area BYCers!

Is there anyone in the Oakland/Berkeley area selling 1-3 day old chicks? Our broody hen only hatched 2 out of 12 eggs and we want to slip a few more chicks under her before she gives up. We're not picky about breeds.

Is there anyone in the Oakland/Berkeley area selling 1-3 day old chicks? Our broody hen only hatched 2 out of 12 eggs and we want to slip a few more chicks under her before she gives up. We're not picky about breeds. Hoping to avoid driving out to Alamo or Mike's for hatchery chicks.

A useful idea for coop/run in perches

Unfortunately chickens don't wrap their feet around the roost bar the way that parrots do because they aren't zygodactylous. Their claws won't rub on the sand paper as you are planning. Also for chickens you'll want to make sure the roost bar is wider than something their feet would curl around...

I'm a brand new member on BYC and this will be my first time raising chickens, though my partner has lots of experience. We are building everything from scratch in our small urban backyard in Oakland, CA. We are renters and are grateful that our landlords are allowing us to have chickens! But...

    Bald neck!

Romeo, I recently adopted a hen that may also have come from a battery and who also has very pink skin and missing feathers on her underside. I posted this forum post and got some good responses. I now believe that my hen has ammonia burns from sitting on dirty bedding before she came to me. I...

4 year old hen is missing all the feathers from her underbelly

Quote: We aren't very certain what her conditions were like before us as we adopted her (along with 3 6 month olds) from a friend of a friend who said they needed to be re-homed since their owner was moving. Our friend has connections to rescue organizations that take older hens from factories...

4 year old hen is missing all the feathers from her underbelly

We adopted our 5 hens 20 days ago. 4 of them are 6-8 months old and one, Sunny Side-Up, is 4 years old. We were told ahead of time that Sunny was no longer laying. When she first came to us she was sitting in the nest box a lot, but she didn't put up any resistance when we kicked her off of it...
