Curious whether you purchased straight run chicks, or guaranteed female chicks? I'm pretty sure both the Welsummer and BCM chicks she sells are all straight run. It's unfortunate that your ratio in the end wasn't 50/50, but that's the nature of nature. It's an average, not a guarantee...
For anyone interested in a follow up: my "Welsummer" is indeed an Azure Egger, and laying pretty blue-green eggs. Alas, no lovely speckled brown eggs for us 😥
Alchemist is really an amazing farm! I love what she is doing to provide food for low income families in the area by committing to donating unsold male chicks, and I love her commitment to sustainability. It makes me really proud to support her efforts!
It also helps that her birds are pretty...
Certainly ANYTHING is possible! What I ordered was:
1 - Welsummer unsexed
1- Cocoa egger unsexed
2 - Azure egger female
1 - Sage egger female
I don't believe I actually received a Welsummer, as the two chicks with that coloring have crests and Welsummers should not have a crest. I have a...
Hi there! Blueberry is about 11 weeks old now and the comb is pretty much the same size as it was when I posted the photos at 6 weeks! It's barely grown at all and is still quite pale, the same as the azure egger girls. I still don't see any signs of male feathering so I'm hoping it's a she =)...
Assembled an integrated coop/run that was purchased from Carolina Coops. Had to make a lot of minor modifications to it, both from a personal preference perspective, as well as many small mistakes in the materials they sent.
I really wanted to build myself but didn't have the skills to go from...
I did get my chicks from Alchemist!
I'm no expert as I'm brand new to chicken-keeping, but at this point your Welsummer looks to have the coloring and markings of a pullet from what I know about the breed. Rust colored chest, strong eyeliner, v-shape markings on the head.
My chick that was...
Yes it is the California Coop from Carolina Coops.
That's a great idea. I'll buy a 3ft board and see how that works. If I use a 2x4 with the long side up, that might create enough leverage to keep it stable.
Thanks for the idea!
This isn't my actual coop, but a photo from the manufacturer's website of what the plans call for the inside to look like. The photo is taken from the double doors, which cover the entire fourth wall of the coop, hence the reason there is no option to run the roosts in that direction. The...
I searched the forums for an answer to this...but wasn't able to find a similar question, so hopefully this post will help others who have small coops too!
My coop is small - 3'x4' - with an attached fully secure run that the birds have access to at all times. The way the coop is designed, my...
Not certain of the genetics, but it's basically an EE that lays a speckled light green egg.
I have two birds I'm not sure who is who. One is supposed to be a female sage egger, and the other is supposed to be a straight run cocoa egger.
I thought Blueberry was the sage egger, but of the...
This little cutie is a mixed breed - Blueberry is either a sage egger or a cocoa egger and is just under 6 weeks.
Thoughts on whether Bluebs is gonna crow or lay??
