There are feral chickens where I live.
I often see single roosters on their own, or a single rooster with a single hen. The biggest "flock" I have ever seen is one rooster with 4 hens. Hens are alone if they have chicks. I have never seen a "bachelor flock".
There are many predators here so I...
I am trying to capture a feral game hen. She appears to have a broken wing, so I want to do this ASAP without causing more damage. I know which tree she roosts in at night. When I put a ladder up this evening (after dusk but not pitch black), she saw me coming and jumped to a different tree...
Well I finally did it. The fluid had grown to the point where she was having trouble breathing. It was surprisingly easy, I stuck the needle in and she completely relaxed and went to sleep. Drained about 300cc in total. There was more in there, but the needle slipped out and I didn't want to...
She had blood test and ultrasound done at her last appointment. Kidney/liver were fine, and the vet did not see anything that looked like cancer. I originally considered having her euthanized, but the doctor said it was a reproductive disorder that could probably be managed for months, or years...
A month ago, I took my hen to the vet for ascites. The vet drained a lot of fluid and the hen was much better after that. Thread about that here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/my-experience-taking-a-chicken-to-avian-vet-for-reproductive-problem.1351340/#post-22274156
The fluid is...
Yes, I hope I did not give anyone the impression that they were cutting corners. I was impressed with how thoroughly they examined the chicken (ultrasounds for chickens? That's nuts!). I'm just really paranoid about germs these days.
Yes. I left the name out of the OP because I did not want to make it seem like a critical review in any way. The intention of the post was just to report my experience, because I had no idea what to expect before taking chicken to a vet.
Many people have mixed feelings about taking chickens to the vet, so I wanted to share my experience to help others if they are in a similar situation. (mods, feel free to remove this thread if inappropriate).
2.5 year old hen with bloated stomach, lethargy, inappetance. Took her to an avian...
When chicks are raised by hens that are not their biological parents, do they adopt the personality traits of the broody that raised them? I have one shamo mix pullet that was hatched by a broody leghorn. Only one egg hatched. The shamo is 6 months old and just started laying, and is noisy and...
Can you bring the cockerels inside the house, to live with you? Maybe a spare bathroom or laundry room. A lot of people have house chickens. They will be safe inside, and won't fight if they can't see the hens.
