Billie, my Blue Copper Maran, started laying her beautiful dark brown eggs this week. Now I can't stop going into the kitchen and staring at our rainbow carton of eggs. I'd love to see your favorite picture of beautiful eggs!
Thank you - I’m glad you like it! The initial coop only took a weekend. We started early Friday afternoon and had it finished Sunday evening. We got our first two chickens the following Thursday. Would love to see your final coop once you’re done!
I was recently asked to provide more information and pictures regarding the DIY A-frame chicken coop that my husband and I built using an old wooden swing-set. Here is the blog post I made about it.
It did! The run barely had snow in it. But it did make the run really dark so we had to knock some off and help the chickens out because it prevented our solar door from opening the hen house. But we learned from that mistake and relocated the sensor just in case we got more snow.
We are in South Carolina and that was our one real snow of the year. (We might get a few flurries at night that don't stick a handful of times). All of that snow was melted and gone by the end of the day! I loved it while it lasted but can't imagine dealing with that for much longer.

I love to watch them run at this age! They seem so awkward with their little bodies and long legs that they are just starting to really grow into. That and when they try to take off flying. It's sad to see them grow up but then comes the fun of finding their first eggs!

She was thinking "just when I get some peace and quiet, she starts yelling my name!"
Glad you found her though! It's such a scary feeling to have them gone missing!
When my girls were attacked, we cleaned their wounds daily, sometimes multiple times a day (especially the first few days) with diluted iodine and saline as best as we could without messing with the dried blood. We did use syringes (without needles) to wash out the wounds so that we could use...
My husband and I built our coop out of a wooden swing-set that was already in our yard when we bought our house. We ended up building an extension for the hen house, but other than that it's stayed the basic A-frame.
