    roosting

Update on going outside. It's a little more than a month later and up until the other day I could not beg any of the new girls to come out into the run let alone outside of the run. Well yesterday I decided I would close the chicken door I have for them and get them 1 by 1 and move them to the...

    roosting

Thank you for taking time and giving me your opinion. Appreciate it. I will keep blocking the nest off. I have 6 nesting spots all in a line from when I had the 90 a few years ago so even when I open it up in the morning I only open 1 right now because that is enough for at least a week or 2...

    roosting

Right now they are 20 weeks old and as far as roost go I have several different ones. Probably 20 to 25 feet of flat 2x4 because here in Ohio that is what I do until it warms up and there are a few 2x2 roosts for them also. I will go out to the coop and when I walk in during the day they are all...

    roosting

Even though I thought I could figure this one out...... I can't. Just a short history, I had 4 hens in my coop, and here in the last couple months I brought 11 of the chicks I had raised over the winter out to the coop also. They are all together now but some if not all the dog gone new girls...

I think I did this but just incase.

Hi! I am in northern Ohio. Southern Lorain County. I have been a member of the group for probably 5 to 7 years but drifted away for awhile when I sold my hens a few years ago. I was done with it. I think the last bunch I sold, I sold 60 of them for $60. I was just done. Years ago I started...

    Pasty butt

So I have raised right around 70 + day old chicks over the years and got away from raising chicken for a few years, because it consumed to much of my play time. I just recently started back up. Last spring I incubated several eggs and ended up with 4 hens laying very good right now. Eggs are...

Where to buy fertilized eggs now (Jan23)

I was at Meyer's yesterday. That is who I buy from, and I have been checking their inventory and gezzz, you have to wait months for just about anything there anymore. Bit yes they pretty much offer eggs year around. Just don't be in a hurry to get them!!!

    Order fertilized eggs?

At one time when I was a 90+ chicken farmer, I had a broody hen. All my girls loved me and I took good care of them. If I wanted them to come I would whistle or yell for them and they would come running. I free ranged/pastured the flock. When I noticed that I had a broody hen, the first thing I...

(Let Broody Hen Do It All) Experiances Please

I had a broody hen when I had a bunch of layers for selling eggs and just for fun. I though how great it would be to buy some fertile eggs and have her take care of them. so I did. She did a great job in her own separated area, because I had right around 85 hens at the time, and took care of the...

    I'm back

I was here several years ago. I started off with 15 chicks and before I took what seemed to be my second breath I was up to over 90 egg laying queens!!! Found that I needed some me time so I sold or gave away the heard and enjoyed some me time for several years. The urge hit me again and I...

What type of feed do you provide?

I have close to 70 girls and everyday at around 8/9am I turn the girls into alternating runs where there are plenty of bug, greens and berries to snack on. Around 11am I give them 3 to 4 big scoops of a 16% grain blend from Spencer Elevator. Around 12/1pm I turn them loose to feed in the pasture...

Comment by 'ffibyar' in article 'What to do with your extra eggs'

Right now I am getting around 40 eggs every day from around 65 hens/pullets. I am having a hard time keeping up with the demand from my customers. But, if I ever do have any eggs more than a week and a 1/2 old I donate them and plus I always make sure my wife's and my family have eggs.
