    My Light Sussex hates me!!!

My Sussex, Maude Alice, is the most verbal of the group and she comes to me for worms. I can hold her on my knee and stroke her. She is the not at the top of the pecking order, she has quite the appetite. There is not a mean bone in her body. My Buff Orpington, Ozella, is at the bottom of the...

    is a door needed?

Quote: I have agree with OPA. But, you have to know I live where it very warm (only a few nights below freezing each year) so I am not sure my opinion is worth a great deal. Opa does have that cold to deal with, Makes sense to me.

seeking input on coop improvements, please! (pic intensive)

My girls are jealous of your coop. I know you want to keep them warm and dry, correct the ventilation problem and rid yourself of the mold. Other than that, you have a great place and space for the.

What do you use to entertain your chickens in your run?

I have a roost. I am also interested in hearing other ideas. I have heard of hanging a cabbage from the top for them to eat on. I only have 4 chickens. I am hesitant to put a whole cabbage out there. I also saw a bird feeder, specifically a suet feeder with various raw veggies inside and it...

Tell the truth - how clean is YOUR coop?

Quote: Apparently I am the only one that doesn't know, since no one else has asked the question. What is a "manure box"? The manure box is placed beneath the roost and runs the length of the roost. It is 4" in height and has metal flashing on the bottom of it. I fill it with stall dry and...

Tell the truth - how clean is YOUR coop?

Quote: Wish I'd thought of caulking while I had everything out today. DH is the king of caulk but he's out of town again. I will be building a tractor soon -- when I get the materials together -- and I am planning on caulking the dickens out of it. I've had experience in the past with leg...

Tell the truth - how clean is YOUR coop?

Quote: I have to agree with this. The inside of my coop has fiberglass board on the floor and on the wall behind the roost. I also have a manure box, I like that feature very much. My husband laughed at me for caulking the entire inside of the coop, every place two pieces of wood came together...

    Book reccomendations needed please!

The Joy of Keeping Chickens by Jennifer Megyesi Non-fiction, beautifully written, interesting and incredible photography by Geoff Hansen. The series of books by Rita Mae Brown mentioned earlier is a fun read. I have a Corgi and could tell she had had first hand experience with the breed.

    meal worm questions

I fed meal worms to chicks two weeks old. They love them. I did offer them starter grit at the same time and have had that available for them since that day. I read that their snacks or treats should not make up more than 10 percent of their total diet, so that has become my rule. Seemed like a...

My Speckled Sussex was the hungriest and loudest of my chicks. There was no ignoring her. Oh my, the older she gets, the more beautiful she becomes. Thanks for sharing the photos of the babies. Takes me back to that lovely time with them.
