My BRs are just about same age. One started laying 2 weeks ago, another today. They had been and still are very vocal starting a couple weeks prior to the first egg. I also noticed they were doing a lot of nesting behaviors everywhere, outside dirt, coop shavings, nest boxes. In and out in and...
Will try! Lol 😆 hard to hold birdies and camera. I'll have to see if I can get the husband to help. I read that barred rock pullets tend to have thicker black bands and barred rock roos tens to have thicker white bands. I noticed one of the three does appear to have thicker white bands making...
5 weeks old tomorrow... roos or pullets? They're supposed to all be hens, and they'd darn well better be! For reference: there are 3 barred rocks, 3 easter Eggers, and 2 black australorps. I did my best trying to catch a decent bit of each one. What do you think? Do I have any roos?
Okay, I am wondering if maybe what I saw was just a random bug, let's hope! It was definitely all by its lonesome, none others in sight.
I'm thinking sand too. It seems simple and at least easy to find.
Thank you! I do clean it often, yes. Every day we change everything over and start with fresh water and food. The water is hanging with nipple waterers so it doesn't get very dirty. True I did not think how messy it would be. Good point.
Hope everyone had a lovely weekend!
Our girls reached 19 days old, and our run was finally secured so we took a moment to let the girls venture in their soon-to-be home! They had SUCH a blast on this gorgeous 85 degree day. I have 3 barred rocks, 3 easter eggers, and 2 australorps. I still...
I'm finishing up the final touches of our coop, and beginning the run. I am going to be using wooden dowels to hang feeders/waterers. The waterers I want to use are ones I have made from 5 gallon plastic pails with nipples screwed into the bottom. Feeders I have not decided upon yet.
My noob...
Okay, thank you. That is very relieving to hear. I'd like to never encounter this!
I did have an infestation of mites one time from my cat, believe it or not. It was one of the worst experiences of my life. The mites were so small that no one could actually see them on my cat (except me and I...
New chicken person here...
Is prevention of these things possible? What is the best regular maintenance besides keeping the coop clean and dry to prevent this from ever occurring? I regularly treat my dogs and cats with flea and tick prevention every month. Is there an equivalent for chickens...
Great advice for us newbies. We have 6 lil' chicklings coming in May. I am working on constructing a brooder out of two XL dog crates. I am going to use the walls of a large cardboard box with the same dimensions for siding to keep the bedding from being kicked out and to maintain temperature. I...
