    4-5 week old chicks

I have to agree with all posted. Wait till they are feather out and I use larger pine shavings. I have not yet prevented any chicks from dumping there food, and I have use commericial and homemade feeders. I let their dish run out and then they have to go forage among the shavings.

    need help!!!

I had one hatch and lost it. Its little top beak was "crooked". Instead of the back of the beak being center, it was off to the chicks right, where they eye was to be. It only made it a day before it died. I felt so bad for it.

    humidity, yes or no?

I only have two hatches under my belt. Each of 9 eggs started. First hatch I lost hair trying to keep humidity where "it should" be. Hatched 4 of 9. This next hatch I just kept it above 50% and got 7 of 9, and my hair grew back. Whenever I over think items, I tell myself K.I.S.S. (Keep It...

    Turkens and Silkies

I recently reduced my flock of Buffs and went and got some Turkens. So ugly that they are cute....LOL. The man at the feed store stated that a mix of Turken and Silkie is an a mix that many search for. I never heard of this. Has anyone else?

    Newbies in the chicken world!

I like the magic number of six to ten, especially if a straight run is how you are getting the wee ones.

What do I feed my chickens?

I make my own mixture. Whole pellets, crumble, cracked corn, and whole corn is their main diet. I will give crushed oyster shells, left over vegetable ends from salad makings, the dreaded ends of bread loafs, and my girls love left over mashed potatoes. Funny watching them eat mashed potatoes...

    inside a coop

My chicks love grass clippings. Made the mistake of trying to use it to cover a flooded run to make a suitable walking area. It was all matted, and decomposing, and labor intensive to remove it.

    Two coops, one run?

Sounds interesting, I have not tried this. I have a 5x7 coop that stands 6.5 feet and a run that is 5x15. The run is made from a dog kennel that you can get at lowes. My thought is to put a 3x5 "coop" at the other end for food, water and nesting boxes and leave the other (original) side to...
