So i thugh i all i do is spread the bottom of the coop with pine shavings but my dad told me that you should pat down a layer of dirt and then put the bedding on top, is this true?

I'm not sure. I just threw a bunch of dead leaves in mine.

yeah we save grass clipping and things like like (pine needles, leaves, etc. ) and ive looked online and couldnt find anything about a layer or dirt... however i do know that you pat down the dirt on the outside.

My chicks love grass clippings. Made the mistake of trying to use it to cover a flooded run to make a suitable walking area. It was all matted, and decomposing, and labor intensive to remove it.

yeah i gave them some grass and they ate some of it... i still dont see why he wants to put dirt in it though... exspecially when you would try to broom out the shavings it would bring the dirt with it would it not?

Can you use cedar shavings for their nest boxes? Also I have been using the pine shavings inside the cage for the bottom for my little chicks. When I clean it out can I put it in the chicken yard?
