    Maine

Quote: Just wondering... exactly what qualifies as central Maine? Androscoggin county? Kennebec County? I think as Cumberland County as southern... but Piscataquis is more central... but who lives there? LoL! Oxford and Franklin are Western Maine... Opinions everyone? I'm in Penobscot...

    Maine

Bumping the Maine thread! Thought I'd introduce myself to my fellow Mainers. I live in central Maine out in the country. My first broilers will be arriving May 6th! Can't wait, but it'll be some hard work!

Do you ever get over the "eating a pet" feeling?

I know they become like pets to us. We have a Jersey calf named Bambi that will someday be our hamburg & steak, it comes with the territory of raising animals for food whether it be eggs or meat. Just know that you raised them well, you know what they were fed and you gave them a great life...

What do you do with the livers, gizzards, necks, feet and beaks?

I plan on giving the gizzards & hearts to the dog. Nice treat and no waste!

    Nuisance Skunk

I've heard of people live trapping the skunk, placing a blanket over the trap to move it to a place where it can be shot. I'm not sure of any other ways to remove a skunk w/o a stinky smell. http://www.howtogetridofstuff.com/pest-control/how-to-get-rid-of-skunks/

We currently have 3 Holsteins & a Jersey bull calf that will all most likely be filling the freezers this fall. My...

    Best Housing For Meats?

We have a black lab that does great with the chickens we have now and barks at any suspicious noises at night while she's inside. The chickens will be near the house and we can steak the shelter down. We also both own fire arms and have no problem ridding ourselves of pests.

    Best Housing For Meats?

Sounds like a tractor is the way to go. I think I've found a good one, looks light and easy to build. That way I can take it down for storage until next time.

    Best Housing For Meats?

Yea it just dawned on me how much protein the meat birds need & how much more they eat. See, still learning!

    Best Housing For Meats?

New to the forum! I have 26 broilers coming the first week of May. We have a chicken coop at home w/ a fenced in run, but not sure if I can mix these guys with laying hens. Or if my father in law wants to share . I've never raised chickens on my own (grew up on a dairy farm), but participated...
