Silkies are the best. Some people are even keeping them in their home as a house pet. They are my favorite breed and they really are better companions than most cats. They are fun, beautiful and great mothers. They are bantams so they stay small, that makes it easier to keep more and have all...

They are a bit skittish but over time they calm down. The best thing that's worked for me was to almost ignore them. I would go in their coop with a little treat and then give them the treat and pet them once or twice and then just go about my business. It seemed like after the second time my...

I love my EE's. They are awesome layers and are very friendly. Some of them can be a bit skittish but as they grow up they learn that they can trust you. They have been so great that I recently added some Bantam EE. They haven't begun to lay yet but I'm looking forward to their cute little...

    Flies Killing My Chickens?

Thank you so much. I never realized what a problem the flies could be. I will be prepared for next summer, that's for sure. I guess it will take a combination of treatments to be very effective for now. My coops do have great ventilation but the heat is crazy. I just ordered a camera...

    Flies Killing My Chickens?

When I lost the first bird the day before, I chalked that one up to the heat, but then when the second one passed from the same coop, I wasn't so sure. My other 2 coops are fine and they have young birds in them. I keep tubs with frozen water bottles in them for my birds to roost in, They...

    Flies Killing My Chickens?

Thanks very much..... I do have one of these currently and it claims to hold 40,000 flies. Yes, 40,000, lol. When I first placed it up it did seem to lessen the flies so maybe I will put a few more up. Thank you very much, I appreciate the support.

    Flies Killing My Chickens?

Thanks very much. I do have the fly paper up and the new water catch system. They both do work but ideally I would love to just keep them away. They seem to be increasing with our rising temps. I may just be imagining it but it sure seems that way. Good luck with your birds and thanks again.

    Flies Killing My Chickens?

Thank you for the fast response. The poison I mentioned is actually not near the coops or birds and my other 2 coops are fine. I like your idea about the flies possibly feeding off of something with poison in it and then transferring it to my birds. I just was outside and there still are a...

    Flies Killing My Chickens?

I am fairly new to keeping chickens and this is my first full AZ summer with them. I cannot believe the amount of flies around and in my coops. I have plenty of traps/poison around but they still are everywhere. One of my coops had it really bad and I have lost 2 great birds on consecutive...

Which one of these is most freindly/ your favorite?

I love my Silkies. They are so friendly and never bother any other birds. Of course, I'm not talking about laying. This is strictly about friendly, fun birds.

When can I start eating eggs laid by new chickens

For me it depends on the weather. I'm in AZ and it's 112 degrees today. Any eggs outside all day today, I would not eat. If you live somewhere else and it's not so hot or the eggs are not outside but in a coop, well, that's a different story.

    Chickens Fav Treats!!!!

Each one of my birds has different likes and dislikes when it comes to food BUT when it's spaghetti, it's like the bell rang and the gloves come off. Lol. My well behaved chickens become monsters towards each other and I get some free entertainment.

How long can eggs be kept in the "bull pen" before incubating?

The last 3 days of incubation require you to raise the humidity for the chickens about 10% or so. Also, the eggs shouldn't be turned during the last 3 days. Good luck.

Yes, I will be glad to write another review down the road. We live in AZ so we really don't have winter. The are handling the heat extremely well though. We have been over 100 degrees everyday for several weeks now. They are not the in-your-face annoying type at all. They are just curious and I...

    Chickens Fav Treats!!!!

My silkies don't seem to like what my other birds do but they ALL love watermelon. Lol. In the desert some of their favorite treats are cold spaghetti and cold watermelon. I still give them bread and croutons, which they all love. Cold cuts also go over very well ! They love all meat and...
