Girls are not happy with my arrangement for their laying box (help?)

I have 2 turkens and a silver-laced Wyandotte ready to start droppin' 'em. I bought a bale of straw today and put some in their laying box. At first they didn't mind, but a little while later, every last bit of straw was out of the box and spread astonishingly even over the the ground of their...

    The demise of my birds

After a series of predator attacks, I had been left with 10 hens and 1 hen duck. They were living with our former landlord, as he had the coop and we had nowhere else to put them. I came by every day to water them, feed them, and collect eggs. The landlord had left town for a while, and had left...

Brother's cat killed 5 birds; 5 others hurt

Quote: I was going to say the same thing - I think the "predators and pests" in this case is your brother. You wouldn't be in this situation if not for him. This sort of nonsense spills over into other aspects of their life and needs to be dealt with sooner rather than later. I'd have a...

Brother's cat killed 5 birds; 5 others hurt

It all makes sense now- it wasn't a cat or a dog. It was a wolverine. I saw it face to face. Sadly, my shotgun malfunctioned. We have a trap out for it right now. Tomorrow morning it should be dead. Its pelt should go for $60-90 towards the $250+ that it will cost to replace my lost birds.

    Brown Leghorns vs. White Leghorns

So if I want the best layer but also need a relatively peaceful bird, then the brown leghorn would be the choice?

Brother's cat killed 5 birds; 5 others hurt

He'll be 16 in a couple weeks. He loves those birds as much as I do- I just don't think he fully understood that ducks and chickens are quite defenseless. I think that he was under the impression that if they can't get out, nothing can get in.

Brother's cat killed 5 birds; 5 others hurt

The coop was perfectly predator-proof until my stupid brother knocked the doors off their hinges and took an ice pick to the chicken wire.

Brother's cat killed 5 birds; 5 others hurt

Dog this time. I am down to 3 BRs, 3 EEs, 1 SLW, 1 AU or JG, 1 GC, 1 WPR, 1 mallard drake who may or may not make it, and 1 cayuga (don't know the gender) who is badly limping.

My Hen went broody and look what happened!

Hmm... I didn't know comets could go broody- I thought it was bred out of them. Once in a blue moon, I suppose. BTW- Congratulations! There are very few things in life that can bring the amount of happiness you get from watching a chicken family.

Brother's cat killed 5 birds; 5 others hurt

If it was anyone else's cat I would kill it. It is a bloodthirsty little rat, and now it knows that it can kill my birds and get away with it. I don't think I have ever wanted to kill an animal more- even when hunting. Some of the birds she killed were only a week old when I got them- some less...

How do I tell a Jersey Giant pullet from an Australorp pullet?

Thank you all very much! Now I know which is "Aussie" and which is "Joyzee!"
