What did you do in the garden today?

We have also been "cheating" with our onions. I thought the prices for onion starters was crazy. I hear they were a mole deterrent-I don't really know that it works, but our gardens are surrounded with onions and garlic. So far our plants have kept their roots this year. Our crazy dog likes...

Pekins introduced to older chickens today

Before combining our flock the birds were able to see each other and socialize. Basically they got to know each other without intruding on space or being able to attack. When we lifted the gate to let them mingle we put out tons of treats all over. The birds were too busy getting treats to...

What did you do in the garden today?

Guess I will jump on board! I spend most of my free time in my garden~We finally bought our own tiller, so we have a huge plot this year! Of course we also have 8 people to feed. Yesterday-We ran out to get a hose so I could water the garden because we ran out of rain barrel water. . .(After...

    The Duck Thread

The pine shavings are probably causing the most trouble. Since the dog is already throwing up you probably don't need to make her puke any more- If you did I suggest hydrogen peroxide. Duck food gives our dog diarrhea, so keep her out of that in the future. As for the shavings, my biggest...

    Egg Thief Surveillance

Rodents- Eww! Went out of town the other week, came home to a decaying mouse in an electric trap. . .no matter where I went I kept smelling that smell! Also- as long as you don't let the animal decay, I think electric traps are awesome. No poison to deal with and the ducks wouldn't be able to...

    The Duck Thread

Just dropping in. . .life is so busy! We gave our ducks a bigger pool this past week. They love it! Of course they do. . .the two that are fully feathered rarely leave the water. Our Pekins are finally starting to feather. I am positive at least one duck is a female. I think a second duck...

    The Duck Thread

Sorry to randomly post - My husband had an accident with the table saw on Thursday! :/ Lost two fingers and has one fused at the knuckle. ~Ugh~ Yesterday when I went out one of the ducks was stuck in the baby pool. My husband had taken out the bricks not realizing they couldn't get out...

    The Duck Thread

Yea- no green. I'm just hoping I don't have four male ducks. . .I have that kind of luck when it comes to getting straight run poultry. I'll keep an ear out for quacks!

    The Duck Thread

We put them in a rubbermaid type container that people use for storage. Placed wire on top so our cats wouldn't get to them and put shavings on the bottom. For the water we use a small poultry waterer. The ducklings still get a lot of water out, but the shavings soak it up. I only kept...

    The Duck Thread

Our reoun ducks are feathering- I can't find information about juvenile duck colors. Right now they are patterned brown- so does this mean we actually have females? I think I found my answer to be a big fat no! :p Oh well, guess I will just wait and see. (I read the vent sexing sticky...

Best way I've found yet to deal with snake problems!!

We've lost a few chicks and many eggs to black snakes. One was so fat after gobbling two, month old chicks that it couldn't get back out of the coop. (The chicks were in a dog crate inside the coop.)
