The Duck Thread

Too bad the Lucky Duck isn't closer. I have contacted the country animal control. They are going to contact me if any ducks need homes. I also wrote an article for the local paper urging people not to purchase live animals for Easter baskets. I might check with the city police station about getting a few ducks from the "lake.". As you said, I might end with them all probably all the geese as well :)
At least they would have a chance at a new home if you got them then you could possibly find home for them . Bless you for caring.

In the next county over from us there is a lake and I use to hate to go by there and see the dumped water fowl it was heart breaking. Last week we drove by and there wasn't a single domestic on the lake makes me wonder what happened to them all. Hopefully someone adopted them. I'd hate to think the alternative.

I have a question: how do we limit the water the baby ducks splash on the floor. I had a baby chick just hrs old die. Because I sat her with the ducks a minute. She got knocked into the water. Before I could switch everyone around in time. My partner worried about the walls and mold and the wires to dry underneath it wet. And the bookshelfs they where under. More should hopefully be born these week. And more chickens. I don't want another death.

We put them in a rubbermaid type container that people use for storage. Placed wire on top so our cats wouldn't get to them and put shavings on the bottom. For the water we use a small poultry waterer. The ducklings still get a lot of water out, but the shavings soak it up. I only kept chicks and ducklings together for a week. By that time, the ducklings were big enough to put with the other ducklings we have that are two weeks or so older. At that time they were moved to an extra large, plastic, dog crate that we have for our German shepherd.
In both situations the ducks were not able to splash the water out of their boxes. I don't think they should be kept on wire, but if it is your only option, try surrounding the area with towels so it doesn't get on everything.
Our ducks are now outside. It is over 70 during the day (86 today) and we have a heat lamp at night.
