HELLO & welcome to my page, GARDEN DADDY, here at BYC! I am Mike Millson of Jackson, TN. After many-many years of planning and talking about becoming a backyard flock keeper I decided this spring to just jump into...
I went out just now here in Jackson, TN to put my 4-week old brood to bed and noticed then that one of my Ameraucana chicks (4-wks old) has the very same crossed beak, just happened today. I watch them like a "chicken hawk" and keep a close eye on them daily. But today is the first day I have...
FOR EVERYONE...I found this on my local new channel online information this morning and thought I would pass it on. It is a recall of Purina "Layena" poultry feed. See alert from FDA below for information and states involved. Evidently there are some metal fragments in the feed...
Thanks, Alan, for your advice as well. I have and am only giving them the chick starter crumbles and a few rolled oats daily. Sometimes I will throw in a little leaf lettuce but only enough like you they will finish off in a few minutes. The oldest bunch is almost 3-weeks and the youngest 3...
Thanks, digitS', for the advice. Yes, I have already decided it would not be a good idea. I have only given them really some dry oatmeal and they are loving it, about 1/2-cup a day for all 16 chicks along with their chick starter crumbles and grit and of course fresh water every day.
Thanks, "optic1"...that makes good sense as it takes a liquid to make that into a usable, edible product. Probably not a good idea and think I will let that one go. I just had a source to get that product basically free and was trying to think of ways to recycle something into useful and not...
Has anyone every used any dry Cream of Wheat to feed chicks? I have a source to get some as a supplement to my regular chick grower/starter and the dry oatmeal I am giving as a treat along with some fresh greens but read a little about giving this also. Any advice would be appreciated. My...
I have 2-week old, 10-day old and 6-day old chicks with 4-more (Silver Laced Wyandottes) yet to hatch from my local feed store here in Jackson, TN. I still have all of them in the brooder, with coop and run finished and ready for them to get loose in a few weeks. But I saved an area in the run...
For SPISH: DE is short for "diatomaceous earth" which is a fossilized type of algae that is a natural insecticide as well as a natural abrasive, often used in cat litter and water filtration as well as a product in blood clotting studies and dynamite. Used in chickens and other animals as a...
I have 2-week old chicks and am currently using sawdust and they act like "kids in the candy store" and are having a wonderful time in it. I like the fact that if/when they poop in it I can just add it to either my compost bin or directly into my garden and then replace with fresh. Seems to...
They do not at this time. I have checked them multiple times a day but have read so much about it. It seems to be the common and most offered suggestion to stop or prevent PB so I thought I would ask all of the experts here at BYC. Thanks for your input! I will pick up some long cooking...
Regarding some earlier posts in BYC, I see many people are feeding their chicks oatmeat when their birds get "PB" but will feeding oatmeal to week old chicks prevent this from happening in the first place? I am a newcomer to BYC and thought I would ask as well as introduce myself. Thanks to...
