....and now she has lost both :(
So we will build some form of sling so she is up and heals.
We love your chickens....and if this does not give her a better life, I will humanly put her down.

OK...an update on StumpyHen.
It seems her feet were 'killed off' by frost bite. She is now living (seemly happily) in our basement. One foot has dropped off today. I expect the other will be lost soon too.
We will work on getting her stumps healed and then build her some form of shoe or...
We have one of our girls who just won't get up from the floor.....it has ben so bitter and cold up here in Maine that we suspected she may have injured her foot or got frost bite, so we brought her to live in the basement of our farmhouse where its (relatively) warmer. She has been here for a...
Hi all
I have been telecommuting from our farm in Maine for three years now....and it is a wonderful way to live and work. Lots of people have asked me how I arrange it - and how it works out. So I wrote a guide which I am now provdiding to anyone for free. You can down load it here ...
I know this is an old thred...but it really strikes a cord with me!
We wanted to do it too - and we started in Colorado and now are in Maine...learning as we go.
We have a website that has our hints and ideas...

I hope the OP has followed her dream :)
We have completed a new coop after moving to Maine and decided to summarize what we did - words and photos - to help others just starting out.
I hope this helps. Here is the link
As always, we would love any feedback :)

One thing to do is to put a piece of chicken wire across the door on the inside....one that's just 2 feet high so you can step over it...but it will stop the chickens darting past your legs when you open the door.
This will be my first year trying out SFG!
Finding vermiculite will be my hardest task I think...the rest is easy!
I already have started off some seeds under lights...and look forward to getting the rest going :)
OK...strange question maybe...but I want to get some fence posts for my chook yard (Aussie for chicken=chook). I can't seem to find anywhere )other than big box hardware stores who want a fortune).
Any ideas around southern Maine?

Hi :) We lived in an apartment in Raymond for the last three years - so it is super nice to have some space of our own!
I really like this area.....even in this cold weather and all the snow.

HI all....
We moved into Casco from Colorado a few years ago...and have just bought our first chicks to add to our farm menagerie.
Just wanted to say hi and hope you will all be patient with us as we re-learn the world of chickens.
After experiencing chickens for the first time on our small farm in Colorado (and loving every part of it), we moved to Maine to be closer to family. Our flock went happily to a neighbor...and as we rented for three years up here in the NE, we just could not start our chicken family again...

Well personally i say papers dont matter. If he IS the blood line he says he is then $200 for a pup should be good cause he's gonna be treeing you lots of coons! 90% of the dogs i've had with papers turned out to be lazy no good dogs that layed down at the tree lol. I would be ad i...
We soaked her tonight in warm water and massaged her belly.....which is so swollen. No vets near us will see her
I felt inside her as much as I could and could not feel anything like an egg.
We are so sad we can't seem to help her.
Damn animals...they break your heart at times
