Maine

I have used dumor, I've had no problem with it at all. when I used medicated feed, i had some issues but that was also another brand.
Thanks Hoppy. I did not want to disparage the brand, and knew that if I posted that some one with experience would weigh in on the subject. I'm glad to hear from you that the 20% protein is not the cause. From what I've read, it's strictly vitamin E deficiency, and nutrition in feed tends to deteriorate over time. I just wanted to give people a heads up so if they see this problem, they can treat it. Have you had experience with Dumour, and this question is for you and all of the other long term chicken people out there: Regarding prepared general chicken feed, (starter, grower and layer pellets) have any of you noticed an appreciable difference in quality and outcome when using one feed over an other. Of course, the length of time a bag of feed has been sitting around in the feed store plays a role also.

you don't want feed to sit around, it can get moldy, attract mice and all kinds of things. only buy what you will use up within 8 weeks and that's probably stretching it unless you can keep it cool and dry.
I would love to know the name, I live on the border I would hope we could get it up here too!

Maybe I will stop in that store on the way down So Me this summer and see if I can pick up a whole bunch.

I originally bought my feed from TSC (Purina and Dumor) but decided to switch when I started finding whole kernels of corn in bags of crumble. I wasn't too concerned when I found them in the grower/finisher since the birds were big enough to digest a whole kernel of corn but finding whole kernels in chick starter was not acceptable. I have since switched to Poulin Grain. The quality is better and costs the same or less than what I was getting at TSC.

What part of the state are you in and who carries it??

Does anyone know if metcalf's sells pullets?

I know they take in birds from locals. Most of them are usually roos from what I have been able to tell over the past few years. I'm sure you may find a pullet or two but but I don't think they get in older POL pullets. If you mean day old chicks that are sexed then yes they do depending on the breed. The only place that I know that sells older pullets is Longhorn. They get in 12 week old Golden Comets several times a year.

I have fed both Dumor and Purina. I find the birds prefer the Purina and seem to do better on it. So I don't think they are really exactly the same. Overall I really like Poulin and will also feed Blue Seal. For chicks I tend to get Purina Flock Raiser though. I tend to brood ducklings, poults and chicks at the same time so having one food is much easier than a couple different ones.

Thanks, as always, widget! I guess I'll be doing my research on golden comets as hubby doesn't want to deal with baby chicks, which is funny since I would be the one home with them all day lol

I currently have one Golden Comet here. She was a Longhorn bird. She is a nice golden color and a great layer up until the middle of December. Not at all flighty. I'm sure she and her friends on now laying again but I don't know where since they are currently free ranging until the snow melts.
