Maine

I would love to know the name, I live on the border I would hope we could get it up here too!

Maybe I will stop in that store on the way down So Me this summer and see if I can pick up a whole bunch.

The name of the place in New Sharon is White Water Farm - the number is 207-778-4748 if you want to call for specific info on feeds.

FYI Dumor and Purina are made by Purina according to the TCS dealer. I didn't ask, but was in there one day and just asked if there was a difference (I was hauling these big bags out to read the ingredients) and he told me there really wasn't a difference because they were made by the same company. I figure this is like store brand vs name; the store usually contracts to the same maker as the name brand company for the same item.

I don't know about hatching bugs, since the house got so cold last night I saw a dip in the bator this morning (

) but I can say that I found a chicken that I suddenly would like to get and so the 'buy hatching eggs' bug is one I believe in! Poor SO. He is not as ... understanding as yours Kinsey.

HI all....

We moved into Casco from Colorado a few years ago...and have just bought our first chicks to add to our farm menagerie.

Just wanted to say hi and hope you will all be patient with us as we re-learn the world of chickens.

I have spent hours browsing this site, learning all I could while waiting for spring to actually get started with chicks. I wish you the best of luck, and hope you're happy in Maine!!!

does anyone know what could tear through a roof in one night? something tore a hole in one of my coop roofs and killed my jubilee pair....
So sorry to hear about your birds! The Silkies are doing well, resumed laying within a week. I really like them. The paint is a bold one, she is already dominant over at least half of the other hens. The blue follows her everywhere, like her little shadow. They are both favorites of the roos, esp the blue. They love the run, the paint is always the last to come in and has to be "coaxed" (the blue goes in as soon as the paint does). Planning to hatch a few eggs from the blue with the splash Isbar roo, (project to see if I can get a blue smooth sizzle with lacing that lays green eggs.)

Welcome to geoaware!

The feed discussion is interesting. I checked my bag of Purina start and grow, and if I was able to read it correctly (half the label is stuck inside the bag, and I can't flip it over as it is open) the protein looks like 18%. I think that is a little low, so today I mixed some flock raiser in with it.

Once in a while, I make the trip to New Sharon for feed. I have tried their game bird starter for my chicks in the past. I am currently using the all-natural (non-GMO) layer mash with the older girls. It is only slightly more expensive than Purina. The chickens seem to like it, although I have found that what they like most is an occasional change. I haven't ever tried the "regular" layer feed, but it is a little cheaper.

I frequently use Purina layer pellets and flock raiser, mostly because Tractor Supply is so conveniently located and because I love to convert the feed bags into totes.

I don't know if understanding is the word. Extremely annoyed would be a better term. What type of chicken do you wanna get?

Really glad our silkies ended up with a good home and also glad they are fitting in. Good luck with your project!
