    Mixing different ages

Miss Lydia -- I agree completely. I would definitely keep new hatchlings seperated for a few weeks before introducing them. By 4 weeks old, I would think that herd of 10 ducklings would be intimidating. Hehehe. Maybe 3 at the earliest. You're right, though - the little ones should bulk up a...

    Mixing different ages

Cheepcheep, I did something similar just the other day. Ordinarily I would suggest the same thing as Miss Lydia...That advice is solid and is what I do with my chickens. However, your initial 2 birds shouldn't have a problem bringing in another 10 birds in a few weeks. Here's what happened...

    Companion for White Chinese?

Puddle -- thanks! That's kinda what I figured. Now all I need is a GOOSE! I'm having a heckuva time finding somewhat-mature stock in my area!

    owls?

I'm no wildlife expert, but I imagine it would be tough for an owl to take down a goose...unless it's a very small goose/gosling. A mature goose is much bigger than most owls -- so I'd think a smart owl would tend to not mess with them. But hey -- it wouldn't be the first time I was wrong today.

What do you all do for your geese to keep them warm for winter?

Our goose Kow-kow stays outside all the time. No heat lamp, etc. We live near Houston, so our winters aren't especially bitter. We made him a little structure to block the wind and keep his hay dry for him. Other than that, he's in his pool half the time, honkin' away. I figure if all...

    Companion for White Chinese?

Glenn, thanks for the input. Really, though -- my main question is whether it matters what breed the female is. Does it matter? Strickly for companionship purposes... Anyone?

** Female Goose wanted in Katy, TX **

Hi there! Needing a female companion for our 6-month old White Chinese gander. Not terribly concerned about breed -- just MUST be female and close to same age. Willing to travel if you are somewhat nearby. Thanks! Randy

    Companion for White Chinese?

Howdy all! I've got a 6 month-old White Chinese gander who needs a companion -- and I was wondering: does it really matter if we get a goose of another breed? Or should I keep trying to find a White/Brown Chinese or African? I've been having a hard time finding a "match" -- but came across...

Oh no I lost the love! Can you all help?

Yeah -- I'd hesitate to sit down at face-level with them, too. My white Chinese, Kow-Kow, has been such a cutie until a couple months ago. He's hit adolescence, apparently, and has the accompanying surging hormones. I wish I could find a local person with a goose for sale just so he'd have...

Neighbors dog gone into my duck pen (update page 4)

So so sorry to hear about your ducks. We had a similar issue with a neighbor's dog. He started coming over and harrassing our rabbits -- just running around their pen, etc. He eventually broke in one afternoon and damaged 3 of them, leading ot the death of one of the bunnies. We took the...

Ducklings just hatched in Houston -- Newbie Questions :)

Thanks, katharinad and easttxchick! I'll get pics in soon. (Leaving work early to go check on 'em.) Wifey rolled her eyes when I told her 9 hatchlings were on the way. She was quite surprised to open the box to 17! LOL -Randy

Ducklings just hatched in Houston -- Newbie Questions :)

Howdy Gang! I live in Houston/Katy TX and just got a batch of pekins and rouens today. (I only ordered 6 ducklings and 3 chicks -- but they added 8 MORE for warmth! Need any?) Anyway, this is my first time with ducklings and understand that adult ducks don't need nearly the same fussy...
