I'm sorry if this is a silly question: Are there collars to which you can add your address for chickens (for neck or legs) in case they wander too far? A search only found no-crow collars. I'm having this problem with my 3 hens free-ranging beyond my yard.
Ah. He is pretty and a charmer, but I can't keep a rooster in my neighborhood. I'll put him out on Craig's List unless folk have better recommendations?
Making my first foray into gardening. Using 3-level 4 ft x. 4 ft beds (3 of them). Started primarily with some tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers. In my first bed, I planted marigolds around the edges which gave the roots some shade. Wish I had done that for the other two. What other edible...
They're beautiful! Always nice when beauty is matched with good personality. My BA, "Penguin," is a sweetheart, too. So much nicer than the Black Sex Links (Linc) I have
I wish my experience was similar. I have 4 standard-size chickens and one in the middle of the pecking order (a Black Sex Links) picks on my two black bantam silkies. They spend most of the day in the coop, chased there whenever they try to go to the run. I'm at the point where I'm going to...
Hi, Kayla! Welcome to raising chickens. I named my Black Austalorp Penguin, because of its white chest as a chick. She still has two white feathers on her wings, which is nifty.
For my chicken's first food-scrap treat, I had a couple of extra slices of apple, so I diced them up into small cubes. I put them in a bowl with a little scratch. I offer the 4 chickens the bowl, Goldie grabs a piece of apple and the other three chickens ignore me and the bowl to chase Goldie...
My chickens worked at a bare patch in their pen, trying to dust bathe. Is it too indulgent of me that I am thinking about going to Home Depot this weekend for some sand and a large, flat planter for them? (I move their pen to fresh grass every week).
This is a great compilation of information. Exactly what I needed as I wondered about whether I should continue to use the pine shavings I started the chicks brooding as they get older for bedding. Thank you!
First birds this year. 8 weeks into the experience and love it! Anyone else in the area to meet up, trade insights, see each other's coops, and potentially trade chicken-sitting on vacations?
My flock: 4 regular sized birds (though if 2 are males like I think they are, it'll be 2 regular...
I've a similar situation, but I've 2 bantam silkies that are younger that I want to introduce to the flock that is full-size hens. What do you advise for such different sized birds?
For my first foray into chickens, I bought 4 chicks: Black Australorp, Golden Lace Wyandotte, Production Red, and Black Sex Links.
They were sex-ed runs, so I know I had a 90/90/90/100 chance of females. I think the first two are males, but I'm inexperienced. They're bigger, but that could...
