  1. I think they like their new home. I let them out when I'm home and outside. They are very well behaved. The cats don't think so though. These 2 chase our 3 cats every chance they get. It's quite funny. They also chase stray cats out of the yard when they see them.

  2. Our first egg! The first full day that we had them. Alice has been laying an egg a day since then. Peony just laid her first egg 3 months later.

  3. This is the enclosure that I made by stapling1/2" hardware cloth on 3 sides. I buried 1/4" hardware cloth around the bottom about 10", then added small patio stones to make sure the chickens didn't dig too close to the buried screen. The front was framed by my handy spouse, and I actually made the door. The ceiling is just the 1" chicken wire to keep out the cats. So far it's been safe and sound. The small coop is ok for 3 seasons, but not insulated or warm enough for the very cold winter.

  4. The hens like to sleep in the next box. It is most likely because the roost inside this coop is about 4 inches off the floor. From what I've read on this website, the roost should be alot higher than that. It's been really cold at night this November, so they huddle in the nest box to keep warmer I'm sure.

    Corn for winter feed

    Is scratch the same as corn for keeping the chickens warmer during winter? I see cracked corn in their layer mix and wonder if I should be giving them extra corn in the evening? The nights are starting to go below 0 Celsius (32 F) Will feeding them scratch interfere with the layer rations...

    When will my hens start laying?

    That's Peony on the left in the picture, taken the first week we got them. Her comb stayed small this whole time, (three months) until last week. Now I find it hard to tell them apart, especially when I am looking down at them while filling their feeder.

    Peony finally laid her first egg this morning! 31 weeks. It was quite a bit larger than Alices's (whose been laying all along). Her comb started to grow and turn bright red a week ago so I knew it would be any day. It was quite exciting to open the nest box lid and see 2 eggs today.
