Help! My hen has black nails!

I use straw in the coop but have put a little mulch down every now and then. I also have a dirt floor. I try to get the hens to turn it over. The hens have been getting in my front yard where we just mulched.

Help! My hen has black nails!

I feel kinda stupid posting this but I am honest. I was going to take a picture of my hens feet. I wipe her feet down and noticed that the black color came off. My daughter said looks like you have dyed mulch. I asked non-dyed mulch but it looks like I have dyed mulch.

Help! My hen has black nails!

It isn’t cold so it’s not frostbite. I noticed her nails had all turned purple/black. Her feet are warm and supple. No bumble foot noted. She is active. Walks and roost fine. Please help!

Review by '' on item 'Rhode Island Red'

I recently saved a few Reds. They have just started laying and as they are getting the hang of it the eggs are getting larger and a glossy brown. Mine are free ranged during the day and locked up at night. They are friendly and allow me to pick them up to check them out.

What were your worst mistakes when you first started?

I corner my girls. Pick them up awaking and complaining then I sweet talk to them and they settle so I can check them out. I also feed by hand, at night I “tuck” them in telling them what good girls they are, and I also sit with them so they know I’m their friend. Some are more trusting than...

What were your worst mistakes when you first started?

Too many birds for the coop. I rescued 10 chicks from being killed. I have a coop that I bought from someone who built it and he stated that it can hold 10 to 12 chickens. Nope. I need to make it bigger.

    Washing eggs?

Never wash my eggs. I will spot clean if one gets dirty. But leave the bloom on and the last at least a month in the fridge.
