    Advice on chicken attacking newcomer

Ah, to live in the country. I would love to start a little bantam flock, but I suspect our suburban neighbors wish I didn't have my existing 6 hens. Thank you, everyone. You support what my intuition already suggested was true. I am grateful I have a safe place for this little serama gal where...

    Advice on chicken attacking newcomer

Recently, when I went to let our 6 chickens out I found the smallest chicken I've ever seen, just hanging out behind our coop. We later identified her as a mille fleur serama, a beautiful delicate little creature. I'm guessing someone dumped her in our yard, though I can't imagine why. So we set...

    **** C S R A Group ****

Hello all, I hatched some chicks this past spring. Just days before they hatched I was injured, and couldn't walk for 3 months -- setting me back significantly on finding homes for what turned out to be 4 roosters. They are now 3 months old, and need to go ASAP. Does anyone know of anyone in...

Hen abandoned 4 week old chick -- what should we do?

Lazy gardener, I read a bit of your link on raising chicks outdoors and feel much better about the chick in regards to temperatures. I look forward to reading it all once the kids aren't bugging me every five minutes. Looks like I may find a lot of answers within. Thank you!

Hen abandoned 4 week old chick -- what should we do?

I guess I should have mentioned that I tried bringing the other mama (Pearl) and her 5 into the yard, but the single chick's mama (Clementine) tried to attack the 5 babies. Perhaps I should just segregate Clementine since she really seems to be the problem bird at the moment?

Hen abandoned 4 week old chick -- what should we do?

Thanks. I hadn't thought about the mama turning aggressive. We have brought him in briefly before and he just cries and cries for his mama. It's heartbreaking. Will he eventually calm down do you suppose?

Hen abandoned 4 week old chick -- what should we do?

We had two broody hens hatch out some fertile eggs a few weeks back. One turned out to only be sitting on a single viable egg, and only produced one chick. The other has 5 chicks. We've been having to keep both groups separate because the mamas seem to want to kill one another's chicks. The...

    Help! Chick with hernia (?)

Thank you. I do know the girls looked under her -- which is how they knew the chick was halfway out. What a devastating lesson, and heartbreaking to think this little one may pay the price. I appreciate the advice If the chick recovers, could I tuck it back under the mama at night?

    Help! Chick with hernia (?)

We have broody hen who hatched 5 healthy chicks yesterday (Happy Easter!) and the sixth had its beak sticking out of a small hole this morning. A few hours later, chick was half out, and by this afternoon chick was hatched. This was all reported to me by my diligent 9 year old daughter, as I am...

Worming: Does anyone know of a practical use for discarded eggs? In the garden, perhaps?

I'm confused. What other solution? At least one of the birds had roundworms. Live ones. In her poo. What other solution is there?

Ah, I hadn't thought of that, but that does make sense.

    Cats near my Chicken Coop!

We have had backyard chickens for the past year, a flock of 4 that free range, and so far have lost no birds. Our cats are indoors only, but there are at least 3 neighborhood cats that lurk about in our backyard -- since our lot is the only wooded, shady lot on the block. If anything, I think...

Worming: Does anyone know of a practical use for discarded eggs? In the garden, perhaps?

I am so pained over the idea of having to completely discard dozens of eggs that have been amassed during our two rounds of treatment in our four backyard hens. We have been treating with fenbendazole, and are on the second round starting today; so that'll be another two weeks of eggs we can't...

Small egg, even stranger on the inside.... anyone seen this before?

Thanks for the welcome aart! I do wish I had opened the egg in a dish rather than hard boiling it. I guess I was going on the mistaken assumption that it was normal, just stunted. It was about 1/2 - 2/3 the size of her normal eggs. Next time (if there is a next time) I'll open it up in a dish...

Small egg, even stranger on the inside.... anyone seen this before?

It's funny, but when she first laid it I was creeped out. But then a few days went by and her laying went back to normal. So today I told myself I was just being silly. Might be awhile before I want another one of her eggs. But it is a relief to know it's in the realm of "normal."
