I started out last year with 7, which is now down to 5. I've got about 50 or so eggs for hatching but don't expect them all to make it through. If I have 30 to 40 birds when I'm done, I will be happy. I have Ameraucana's for my egg business and other breeds for ME! I'm super impulsive...

Oh gosh, I am so sorry to hear about this. I had one of my hens killed by a hawk last week and THAT was upsetting. I can't imagine losing that many at once.

I've got 9 in the incubator and about 5 of them are hatching today. It's killing me to keep the incubator closed when there's a cute little chicklet inside looking all sweet and pathetic with his wobbly head!

I've got 6 eggs that have been in the basement for 5 days and I'm not sure how long they can be there before they're no longer good enough to go in the incubator. I've been having so much trouble getting my DIY incubator to the correct temp and am getting ready to just pop these eggs in there...

Oh no! I planned on ordering my very first chickens but now I'm not sure if I could deal with opening a box and finding dead babies. So sad to hear about your babies. I think I may have to buy from a local breeder once I get to RI. I hope it all works out for you.
