I like the idea of layering with the lasagna beds -- wish I would have thought of it earlier -- but will for sure clean out my raised beds and do it next winter. To much snow on the ground to do it this winter. So what have we done with our compost -- our bin filled up a long time ago. We took...
We live where there is snow from Oct to March -- and our girls don't like it. Some will fly over patches and other will walk quickly through it --but they quickly go back to the coop -- I keep telling them spring will be here soon and the ground dry/warm.
Thats very interesting -- I knew the shell didn't develop until after the "egg" moved down but I just never thought about something getting "sucked" back up. Thanks for the info -- so much to learn!!

I'm a bit slow at getting going here -- So HI everyone on the Western Slope

Had something interesting happen yesterday. We give our girls table scraps from our fav Chinese restaurant - and in the scraps are pepper flakes. Yesterday in one of the eggs was a part of a pepper flake --really -- no it wasnt blood -- it was a pepper flake. I dug it out of the egg to make...
When mine were babies I started calling them and giving them a treat -- so now when I call them they expect a treat. A friend had to get rid of a couple of hers and it didn't take long for the new hens to catch on. I use cooked rice or cooked spaghetti --some times I also use scratch if I don't...
We have a water container that looks very much like the one you have -- it fits just inside a heated dog dish ( with some wet sand in it) We have nights that can go as low as -20 (and more) and so far it keeps the rim (red part) open -- the top part of the water container has frozen, but the rim...
We adopted our girls last spring, so this is my first time seeing one of the molt. The links were helpful as well as everyones responses. The one that is molting is the one that is always picked on --so I'll make sure she has some extra protin.
Thanks for all your help

It got up to 0 today and the sun was out so I let the girls out to play. They have a run and access to it all the time, but no one ones to go into it.The run is partly covered with a tarp, so there is dry dirt and the rest now has snow on it. Today I let them out of the coop into the yard -- a...
It is a bit different with chickens in extremely cold areas -- and Ive had some good advice from several on this site about the whole issue. Its the morning after and all is well -- we got hit with very sever winds and who knows how much snow yesterday. The snow was coming down sideways so...
Wow is it every blowing outside -- we are in the middle of a major blizzard -- not really cold -- about 18 out there, but the wind chill has to be really really low. I just braved my way out to check on the girls and there is snow inside the coop. There is lots of insulation in the coop but it...
Good morning all
