Jenks is my local option, so I'm going with them. There were plenty of good reviews for the CX, they're a good price and I like supporting local if I can.
We ordered our pullets from Cackle this summer and had a good experience.
No worries on the thread hijack! It's interesting to compare different business models.
I think I'm going with the local option. I can pick up or just a 1 day shipping, and it's under $2 a bird. I can even pick up food from there if I want that's comparable to our neighborhood feed store option...
Thanks for the input so far.
We do have a local hatchery (Jenks) with good prices. Interestingly though a friend found them to be slower than ones she bought from Wilco (like TSC).
Want to get ahead of the panic buying of chicks this year and get some babies on order. We are doing 25 cornish this spring.
Does it matter where you order from, or are they all going to be the same? I know people like Murray McMurray for example but it would be almost $30 more for the same...
Hi all,
We are planning on getting chicks this winter/spring. We have a large, wooden 3×8 brooder to keep them in. However, it's located in our uninsulated and unheated shop.
Provided we keep a heat lamp or two on them, will they be ok? Lows can be as low as 20 in February, but more likely...
Looking for advice on a feeding system for our brooder. We have an 8x3 wooden box that can be divided in half so we can raise two batches of chicks, keep them separated, or to reduce/expand the space as needed.
This spring we did 25 broilers and it worked perfectly. The problem is once you get...
Interesting...they have a good looking shape, so maybe it is time.
I of course just ordered more food, but we are raising pullets in 6 weeks or so, so probably not a big deal to just keep it on hand until then.
My again! :frow
Today is 7 weeks, 2 days for our FR. I just grabbed some big looking ones to try and do a weight check (lol). They are in the 3-3.5 pound range, and those are the big ones. As a reminder, they are "free ranged" in a open run, not a tractor. They're active, happy chickens eating...
There are some trees in the run that help but no man made structures. They do go in on their own, just inconsistently. Last night all but one made it in. Two nights ago, not a single one did. They run and go *next* to it, so they seem to recognize it as a safe place. There is a nice bright light...
Oh! Didn't realize. We are in Western Oregon.
25 birds for an 8x8 coop. Plenty of room for them right now. It has a safe amount of ventilation, but we do need to add a back "window" for extra airflow. Birds are 6.5 weeks, been outside for 3. Spent first three days in the coop exclusively before...
Our Freedom Rangers are in a traditional run/coop set up vs. Tractor so we can use our set up for pullets as well. We have an automatic door set up.
It's working well for us except the damn birds won't go in at night and keep trying to sleep outside unprotected. We hung a light inside the coop...
