Thanks for jumping in Kathy. I'm pretty fair with first aid, but you've got way more experience with why a chicken is sick.
@ Jen: Kathy's advice is what you should be listening to/reading. I think she is a better diagnostician than I am.
It very possible that the wazine would do more harm than good, at least right now. I don't know where you are, but here, with the temps at 100 and heat index at 112, my chickens drink A LOT OF WATER. With dogs, cats and people, you can check for dehydration by gently pinching up a bit of loose...
One poster already said that she is too young to have a massive worm infestation. And, it is recommended not to give a wormer to a sick chicken. Let the medicine from the vet have time to work and keep feeding her...every time her crop goes empty. Be sure she is getting enough water as well...
As to the big girls flying - mine can and do!! After one was lost to a coyote, (in broad daylight), I had to clip one wing to keep them where they are safe. They don't seem to be able to fly very far, but can easily get to the top of the fence and then fly down. A very big pain in the
I kinda think I'm OOL this time. (Out of luck) Only gave 4 eggs to my broody, one got broken, one disappeared and another got broken, leaving one. The other hens have been a little inconsiderate, stomping all over the broody and stealing her nest on her infrequent breaks. Her lone egg has...
Thanks for the encouragement Judy. I gave her 4 eggs to keep her happy, well marked thank goodness. It seems some of the other girls are taking advantage of the brief time she's out of the nest box and leave another egg or two! Fingers crossed that all goes well!
How do I "officially" join this Hatch-a-long? I just put 4 eggs, laid today, under my BA hen. She is just over 7 months and started being broody yesterday. Initially, I took all of today's eggs because I wasn't sure it was a good time of year here in Oklahoma, but I see others in similar...
Is it OK to let a broody hatch some eggs this late in the year? I have a big/young Black Australorp hen trying to go broody. She is just about 7 months old and part of a 10 hen + 1 roo flock. They have a large fully enclosed coop, a big run, and huge backyard. I took all the eggs under her...
I don't mean to ruffle any feathers, but in my experience cats hunt birds and they hunt alone. Cats normally will not attack anything bigger than they are, and will only fight a bigger animal if threatened.
Pet cats are responsible for millions of song bird deaths every year.
Keep your cats in...

This taurine thing can be a whole thread on it's own, so I won't go much farther on our BA thread. You can Google "taurine content in meat" and find tons of info and links that can't be posted here. Just know that the scientists confirm that up to 2/3 of natural taurine is lost in...
