    Spring Molt?

Oh, and she is almost 3 years old. She has always been one of the healthiest hens. None of the others have done this. All are the same age except a couple of 1 year olds and we do not keep a rooster (city laws dont allow them). They have plenty of space and always have access to clean, fresh...

    Spring Molt?

Well I haven’t had time to get a decent picture yet but its basically your standard ugly molt. Old feathers missing in patches all over with new growing. Just like a normal molt it started around her neck and worked its way to her bum. Stress seems unlikely because this is the second year in a...

    Spring Molt?

My BCM seems to have an obsession with molting. Last year she molted in the spring and again in the fall. This year she has done the same thing. Is this a nutritional issue? Is she just weird? Any idea what would cause this? I’ve been keeping chickens for a while but have never seen this before...

Your biggest egg from your chickens

Just got this 109g giant. I am starting to suspect my chicken is aspiring to be an ostrich

    Rescue duck help

I just had to share a picture of some of the members of my adorable odd flock. The ducks and silkie chickens decided to be friends and now sleep together and hang out all day. You guys are terrible enablers because now I’m getting ducklings this spring. Poor hubby :D

    Under the weather

Update: Sparrow passed away this morning. I did an autopsy on her and found that her oviduct was almost completely covered and eaten away by what looks like some sort of cancer. She also had a large blood clot in the main artery of her heart. I took pictures but I did not post them because I...

    Under the weather

So sorry about your poor girl!:hugs I don’t know of any specialist in my area but even if I did I am not in a position to spend a lot of money on her right now. Home remedies are my best option at the moment. Us chicken lovers sometimes have to become chicken veterinarians.

    Under the weather

Update: No change for my poor girl. I’ve run out of ideas as to what could be wrong. She hasn’t laid and egg and outwardly there are really no signs of illness other than how thin she is. The only thing I see wrong with her is her behavior. She just sits huddled as close to the heat lamp as she...

    Under the weather

She hasn’t gotten anything unusual lately and I’m pretty strict about not giving them foods that can hurt them. I had NO idea that layer feed was that lacking. Thanks for that article. I have been throwing around the idea of making my own feed for a while now. Guess its time to start. I’ve had...

    Under the weather

I feed a 16% layer crumble with oyster shell and grit available at all times. They get 1/2 cup BOSS once a day between 8 hens. I don’t usually worm them but I do check their worm count regularly. They get and herbal worm preventative once a month. They also get occasional veggies scraps. Maybe...

    Under the weather

My sweet 2 year old Wyandotte is sick but I can’t figure out what’s wrong. 2 months ago I was out in the coop and noticed she was weak and having trouble standing. After bringing her inside and giving her water and poly-vi-sol she perked right up and acted fine. She stayed in the house for two...

    Strange bubble

You could try a topical treatment. Triple antibiotic ointment (without painkiller) may help. Or a warm compress might help drain it if its a gland issue. Or just leave her alone and see what happens. Just be aware that acting sick can get chickens eaten in the wild so they try to hide symptoms...
