Exploding Egg Under Broody Hen! Help!

So I have another broody hen, sitting on 10 eggs. Three have hatched, and when I lifted mama to check for pips one of her eggs exploded. Forget the horrible smell and gunk, I need to know what to do now! Can I safely move mama and chicks to another nest? What do I do with the remaining eggs if...

    Bragging a little bit....

My Jessie and two of her babies just peeking out. They are 2.5 days old. She is still sitting on 3 eggs.

    Staggered hatch?

So I have a broody hen and two days ago she booted an egg out of the nest. I candled it, it looked viable and close to term so I tossed it in my incubator on the off chance. Mama has an egg pipping now so I checked the one in the bator and saw an internal pip! The question: eggs in bator are...

    The Duck Thread

Well, I personally don't plant anything in my run because mine don't have to be in it for any length of time (I work from home), plus the chickens pretty much ruin anything I plant. I have noticed that they (all of the poultry) tend to stay away from any of the perennial grasses and boxwood...

    The Duck Thread

I didn't see anything in that article that would indicate it would cause any harm to ducks-can you clarify where you saw that? @FishingMT I live in Southern Idaho and we have a LOT of sagebrush. And a lot of water fowl including ducks who use it for shelter on hot days when they are out of the...

    Just a rant...and a legit question

I agree-with everyone who has posted. Lots of people have way different set-ups and different ideas and even mindsets, and that's part of the joy of chickens for me. I mean, we have had lots of setbacks and had to tweak a lot of things in order to be successful, and I am constantly reading and...

    Just a rant...and a legit question

@bobbi-j And @oldhenlikesdogsended up just not offering any further suggestions because I felt like they weren't open to it. The husband of the two said he was around chickens when he was a kid and that Rhode Island Reds lay white eggs was clearly not interested in any real discussions. Because...

    Just a rant...and a legit question

So I met these people over the weekend. They were super excited to talk to me about chickens and wanted to show me their set-up and all of that. Which normally is really fun! But these people...yikes. There were SO many things wrong! Like housing 12 chickens in this little tiny shed (think the...

    New ducklings!

I just tossed him in with our baby chicks-the last turkey we had was sure she was a chicken and did great. I can't believe it was my husband who wanted one!

    New ducklings!

@chickens really my husband named it Rubber Ducky. We just went to the feed store and got another duck (and a turkey...) and my daughter named the new duck Sticks. Believe me, not my choices! And yes, I believe it's a Rouen.

    Bragging a little bit....

My Blue Orpingtons are said to tend toward broodiness but they are a month older than Jessie and haven't even showed signs-so I will likely just let her brood and raise as long as she wants to and keep using my incubator when I want more. We are just really enjoying the natural process! Isn't it...

    Bragging a little bit....

@oldhenlikesdogs how many eggs can she cover? Jessie is my only true banty hen, the others lay Medium to extra large eggs-right now she has one of her eggs and three medium. I think she could set more but I didn't want to overwhelm her this first time.
