You are correct in that they are between 6 and 7 weeks old now, but it was right around July 4th when I noticed that one was clearly turning "red" in the face compared to the others. I just haven't had an opportunity to ask my question until now. It's just funny how every chick is so...
We had a broody Easter Egger in May and gave her 8 eggs from our mixed flock. Our rooster is a Black Jersey Giant and she was able to hatch 4 chicks the first week of June. They are really cute, mostly black, and have grown fast. At 4 weeks old, one of the chicks is already getting a red comb...
So we got this chick from Tractor Supply in May and named her Naomi. I'm pretty sure it's a he because he's crowing already at 10 weeks and he's very red faced compared to the others we bought at the same time. We originally thought he was a Blue Old English bantam, but I really don't think so...
One of our Easter Egger hens decided to sit on eggs, so we obliged and gave her 6 eggs to hatch. Four of the 6 hatched on June 5, so the chicks are now a little over 3 weeks old - not fully feathered. She was a good mama, protecting them, catching bugs and food for them, etc. Then on Sunday...
Any guesses what breed these bantams might be? I included their 3 week old pictures, as well as their new chick pictures.
Old English maybe? Chest is coming in a light brown...
A Cochin - maybe black or mottled?
White silkie?
At first we thought she was a black japanese...
I would guess that it's a combination of both - settling in and not sure where to lay their eggs. I'd lock them in the coop for a few days until late in the afternoon, then they still get an evening of free ranging, but also learn where to lay their eggs.
Updated pictures - 3 weeks old. I thought I'd post new pictures because I think we are definitely off on a couple of our guesses...Here they are at 3 weeks, in the same order as before:
"Violet" Old English - black breasted - still think this is true.
"Martha" - White Silkie - I think...
We picked out 6 bantam chicks from TSC last Saturday and are so excited! I'm pretty sure we've got one white silkie, one mottled cochin, and a few other assorted clean legged bantams. My kids are in love!!
It's now 3 years old and the spaces between the boards have gotten wider. The past 2 winters, we have used feed bags to cover the inside, bottom 2/3 of the coop to cut down on drafts. Plus, we've had some super cold days - in the teens for multiple days in a row which is very unusual for us...
On Saturday, we picked out 6 straight run bantams with the hope of getting 6 girls. We intentially picked 6 that look different from each other, so we have no idea what kind we picked. My daughter did some "homework" yesterday and thinks this is what we picked. I'd love to get your opinions...
I have a backyard flock of 5 hens, 5 4 month old pullets and a rooster. Last night while checking on the chickens, I noticed poop with small, rice-size worms in it. I'm certain it came from the pullets, but I'm not sure which ones. The flock sleep together in the coop and are in a pen...
