    We can't figure it out

I never thought about rats. I guess I thought rats would chew or bite them. We certainly have lots of coons around here, but don't they typically bite off the heads? Will they tear out the feathers and leave the chicken intact, with no external injuries? My husband seems to think that's what...

    We can't figure it out

We've had our chickens a few months, and lost the first ones sometime Friday night or Saturday morning. My husband and young son went to the coop and found 2 hens dead (one of them was my son's favorite) and one stumbling around in a daze. One of the two dead ones had all the feathers missing...

The white one in picture 1 hatched the same day as the 4 bigger dark ones. The ones in picture 2 & 3 hatched 2 days...

    cornish girls or boys?

These were our first hatches. They will be 7 weeks Monday. The four darker ones are noticeably bigger than the three lighter colored ones; they were bigger when they hatched. Their mom is a red laced cornish (I think); our cornish roo is solid white. The man who gave them to us just called them...

    First hatch

A couple months ago, a man gave my husband some chickens. Among them were two Cornish: a red laced hen and a white rooster. We decided we wanted more of them, so we helped our 3rd grade (homeschooled) son build an incubator from a foam box used to transport meds to a farmer's co-op. We created a...
