    Chicken feathers not growing properly

Could be age related. I just posted pics of my own hen having issues like that with the sheaths bare and not feathering. My hen is also 8 almost 9. Maybe its just something that happens when that get that age?

Problem with chicken feather shafts growing in spirals and no feathering on the shafts

Good suggestion! She walks hunched up like she may be arthritic and does preen some but I have not noticed whether she has preened in that area or not. I will keep an eye and see if thats whats going on. If they don't preen it, will it stay featherless like that? Thanks for your response, I...

Problem with chicken feather shafts growing in spirals and no feathering on the shafts

Sorry, I posted this before I got the pics. These are the feathers at the base of her tail and around her rump. They are straight but have no feathering and never get any either. I could not get a good shot of her vent area where the feather shafts are actually growing either in a coiled shape...

Problem with chicken feather shafts growing in spirals and no feathering on the shafts

I have an odd issue with an 8 year old speckled sussex hen that I have never seen before. Lately she has thick feather shafts growing above her tail and around her vent that are spiral shaped and have no feathering on them at all. Has anyone ever seen this before? I can find no info on this...

Need help with sick chicken; not able to stand and falls forward!

No improvement as of today. I have tried poultry nutri drench and poultry cell but she is the same as she was. Eats and drinks if I put it right in front of her. And still flops onto her nose if I stand her up. Her wings and legs work, but she basically pushes herself around on her wings and...

Need help with sick chicken; not able to stand and falls forward!

Hello! I have an 8 year old speckled sussex hen that I am having issues with. I have had multiple illnesses over the years with chickens but am unable to figure this one out. I pulled her and isolated her from the rest of the chickens because she was not roosting and was laying around a lot and...

Need help! May be respiratory problem in this hen; making constant noise!

Well, I am really glad you let me know about this because I have never dealt with it before and it was a bit unnerving to say the least! And if it happens again, at least now I know what I am dealing with! Thanks for your help!

Need help! May be respiratory problem in this hen; making constant noise!

Thanks, Eggcessive! Problem resolved itself overnight just as you said. I had her in the barn but it stressed her out so bad and the sounds were getting worse, so I put her back in the coop with the other hens. Fortunately it was time for them to roost anyway, so she went right in and roosted...

Need help! May be respiratory problem in this hen; making constant noise!

Great! Thanks so much! It does seem like something may be stuck and causing the wheezing. There is no sneezing or any other symptoms at all. I sure hope it clears up on its own. She is isolated in a cage right now and has water. I will add some wet feed eventually.

Need help! May be respiratory problem in this hen; making constant noise!

I was hoping someone could help me! My hen started making noises tonight non-stop and seems to be very distressed. I am wondering if its a respiratory problem but she doesn't appear to have trouble breathing. However, the sounds come out everytime she takes a breath. Anyone out there familiar...

2 Hens died; third hen same symptoms; swollen abdomen, messy bottom

Thanks everyone for your input! I suspect you are all right and that it definitely is a reproductive issue. All they receive as food are chicken crumbles and sunflower seeds and free ranging time everyday, if the weather allows . They are not given garden scraps or any other kind of treats...

2 Hens died; third hen same symptoms; swollen abdomen, messy bottom

Thanks! Looking at the symptoms online it does sound like that's what it most likely is. The one telltale thing I forgot about is the penguin-like stance. They walked upright for quite some time before succumbing. Hoping casportpony may give a bit of knowledge as well.

2 Hens died; third hen same symptoms; swollen abdomen, messy bottom

Hello! I could use some help identifying something going on with my hens. I have lost 2 hens to whatever this is and now a third is showing the same symptoms. The two that died were 2 year old hens, one golden comet and a white leghorn. The one with the same symptoms is also a 2 year old...

Help! My hen has injury on back of head and not eating or drinking!

Well, happy to report things seemed to have worked out ok in the end. I did get a bit of a chuckle too. For the first couple days I was feeding her from a syringe but also left cups of water and crumbles in her cage in case she would eat. Everytime I went down to the basement she would just...
