Moving from Nashville to Chicago. My first flock, very attached. Do I take my girls?

Hahaha, thanks for the last recommendation. I haven't had a northern winter for 6 years, I'm not looking forward to it (but I am looking forward to being closer to family)!

Moving from Nashville to Chicago. My first flock, very attached. Do I take my girls?

Hey all. I'm feeling rather torn and could use some advice. Due to a family member's health issues, I'll be moving from Nashville to the Chicago suburbs for at least six months starting in Jan. I'm still in my first year with my girls, so I'm learning as I go along. How well would they handle a...

    6mo. Barred Rock Pullet? Or...

Thanks for the help and the education, all of you! Now let's see how long I can hide a cockerel. He's an infectious coryza carrier (I've got a closed flock now, one of the two birds I got at the fair brought it back with them and they're all just now getting over it) so I doubt anybody will take...

    6mo. Barred Rock Pullet? Or...

Fred's Hens, those males are beautiful! I'll have to give him another look, but I think the gold/red is just sunshine sneaking in. Found a photo of him when I got him two months ago- Compared to the others his age at the fair, the comb and wattles were less red, but I'm still new to this.

    6mo. Barred Rock Pullet? Or...

Haha, I'm relieved to see it's an overall consistent response, even if it's the less ideal answer. And so much for that blue ribbon he brought home from the state fair for good breeding!

    6mo. Barred Rock Pullet? Or...

I was told she/he was born around 5/1, so I rounded up a little, but I got him/her about a month ago so I can't know for sure.

What do you guys think? No crowing yet, but her/his voice just dropped today and the anticipation is driving me crazy!

Majorly swollen eye for a week. I'm thinking Coryza, won't drain by squeezing. How do I lance?

Thank you, Eggcessive. I've been doing some reading. Fortunately, the swelling doesn't feel hard so we may not be to the surgical removal point. I'm going to try to slowly drain it with a 18g needle first, massage it, try to squeeze it out, and clean up whatever I can see. Then inject Tylan 50...

Crap- what is going on- swollen face

Piotre, can you tell me a bit more about your process for draining the cheek? I think I need to do it on a chicken.

Majorly swollen eye for a week. I'm thinking Coryza, won't drain by squeezing. How do I lance?

Yes, I believe it's coryza, since there is a smell. I spoke on the phone with a friend of a friend and she walked me through three things- 1. Tip the bird upside down and stretch out her neck. When I did this, probably 2 tablespoons of liquid and goo came out of her throat and nose from her...

Diary of a Crossbeak: Support for Special Needs Chickens and their Keepers

Lost my crossbeak EE, Juliet, at age 7 months. By 5 months she was really struggling to eat out of the feeders, so I used an old cat litter box and filled it with three or so inches of feed. The lid on the box kept the feed mostly in while all the girls had fun scratching around. Seemed like...

Thanks for the quick response, cuteubbi. So you're saying squeeze the pus out gently? What did you wash the eye with?

Majorly swollen eye for a week. I'm thinking Coryza, won't drain by squeezing. How do I lance?

Hello, this is my first post on the forum, but I've loved reading other forums for months now. I got my first chickens this spring and I've had awful luck, and I really need some reassurance and guidance. I lost two of my four birds last month, which I had raised from chicks, one to a dog...

Diary of a Crossbeak: Support for Special Needs Chickens and their Keepers

I'm a first-time chicken owner and I just found out I have a special needs crossbeak baby. I just spent the last two hours reading all 44 pages and falling in love with the stories of Broke Beak, Bernard, and others, so I gotta be honest, I'm totally disheartened- so many of them keep fighting...
