    Breast implant?

I just slaughtered a Rhode Island Red rooster and found a very large pocket of very clear gelatinous "stuff". It kinda has me concerned. Have you ever seen anything like this? It's between the fat and muscle tissue and seems somewhat watery, but definitely not liquid. Any ideas?

    New clutch of eggs

It depends on whether she likes the new nest . . . I had a broody that I relocated and she kept going back to the old spot even though the eggs had been moved. I figured out that she didn't like the new nest and made it a bit bigger and moved the eggs to the new nest again and put her there and...

    what breed is best?

From what I've read there is a GREAT variety of personalities within ANY breed (except maybe the white leghorns). So, really there isn't a "best" breed becuase you can get a mean silkie or a friendly production red. I haven't had any purebreds and absolutely love the variety of my flock of muts...

Can I put incubator hatched chicks in with a broody?

OK, I am in a pickle, please help. I have 2 dozen eggs to hatch. A dozen are under my broody as of last night and a dozen will be hatched through an incubator getting put in today or tomorrow. Assuming a 90%+ hatch rate (I know my broody gets about 100% based on the last 2 times she was...

    Integrating Adults?

I've looked for integration posts, but most seem to either be addressing disease or chicks. I have recently (couple months) lost over half my flock to dog attacks, so I am buying some hens from not too far away. They sound like they raise their chickens like I do, Scott-free eating what they...

i think my chicken is a dwarf...will she be ok when she lays an egg?

We have several chickens that are mutts, but two are MUCH smaller (1/2 size) than the rest. One I believe to behalf bantam. That said, they both lay normal size eggs (all mine are medium size from chickens that are less than a year). She'll be fine. Just keep loving her!

Letting them out to free range for the first time....

How far they go depends. I've heard some people say they're flock will range all over the place - really far. Mine however don't go more than a hundred feet or so, but we have stray dogs around and I've lost 5 since march or so. So, mine may just be scared/cautious. As for knowing when to go...

    Treats?

My broody is feeding her babies (3 days old) mulberries fresh from the tree (she munches them to mush first). So, I'd say you'd be fine with treats. Just make sure that if the food needs "chewing" or is hard they have gotten chick sized grit first. Just make sure treats are treats and not meals...

Mama Broody teaching 3 day olds (pic heavy!)

There are 9 chicks. I don't think any of the eggs were laid by her. 8 of them were laid by my green-egger.

Mama Broody teaching 3 day olds (pic heavy!)

With warm weather the momma is more than happy to take her babies out. Makes me nervous! BUT, VERY cute. Hope you enjoyed them. I'm amazed she is willing to take them out soooo young.

    poison ivy?

Will poison ivy affect chickens and/or chicks? My broody couldn't get the chicks back in the coop this afternoon and decided to nest down in a whole BUNCH of poison ivy. Is this a problem?

    Gotta have treats!

I have pecan trees and last winter had baby chicks. After a few weeks I gave mine little pecan bits left over from shelling. They LOVED them. Today I can stop, crack a couple pecans and all of them come RUNNING. They love them pecans!! As adults, I just smash a few between some bricks as toss...
