    broody-ness question

I do put her on 'special eggs' occasionally during the summer but what I am perplexed by is that she has been showing all the broody characteristics for well over a week but still gives a daily egg......that is surely not the norm........and yes I am gently convincing her that during blizzards...

    broody-ness question

Just when you think you understand them one of my hens has gone broody, even feathering her nest and needing to be taken out of the hut for food, drink and a serious poop .....fair enough, though it is Scottish winter BUT just about every day she is producing an egg which I steal away at...

    Interior Coop Pics

Having hatched this summer (with the help of broodies Hardy and Freeman !) 2 Nankin and 3 Gold Lace Polish with 'wild haircuts' I wanted - nay NEEDED a bigger coop for them and my aching back. However the five tribe and their mums were very content in the wee coop and the other 2 hens plus...

    Sneezing repeatedly

I was concerned about the dust from the wood chips so have put down loads of newspapers in the coop instead - also read something about the chicks eating it and getting impacted. They are snuggled down in straw at night with their 'mum' in the nest box. There is nothing at the beak but will...

    Sneezing repeatedly

One of my GL Polish 3 week old chicks has started sneezing...doesn't seem to be ailing otherwise. I really don't want to segregate the wee thing. I have rubbed vapourub in the coop and have put Life-Gard vitamin supplement in the water - is it too early to consider an anti-biotic or...

    Nankin Discussion Thread

If they are girls are they reasonable layers ? It seems that the Nankins are flighty but there is plenty of space for them. Any characteristic info would be most welcome for them and GLPs. My great thanks for the advice to let the broodies do all the rearing.....fingers crossed they have...

    Nankin Discussion Thread

I have just hatched two nankins - Nip and Tuck....here is a picture of them sitting on their 'mums' at three weeks. Your pictures certainly look like I expect mine to look Yesterday I hoped to find a new Gold Laced Polish bantie under the broodie but there were three !!! They are the most...

    Nankin Discussion Thread

I have hatched a pair of Nankin chicks (just one week old) one is much lighter, the other having a more golden tinge so am assuming, undoubtedly erroneously, that I have one of each. Thanks for all the pictures and the personality trait information. I was watching the wee fluff balls using...

New chickies under the broodies !

Hopefully this is a piccie of Hardy showing new chickies how to eat.

New chickies under the broodies !

Chicks eating and drinking just as the mums have shown them....there seems to be a friendly agreement between Freeman and Hardy to share 'baby-sitting'. One tiddler couldn't manage the jump into the nestbox so one mother got behind and 'headed' it in....a perfect goal !
