One of my Ancona ducks is running around with her mouth open a lot. She’s also has her head tucked in more than her duck buddy, is a bit fluffier than normal and is doing a weird wing twitching thing. I’m trying to decide if she’s hot/stressed or if she needs a trip to the vet. Eating and...
Thanks for the insight. Yes, my concern was that maybe the soft egg ruptured inside her and the yolk could create a breeding ground for infection. I lost another hen to confirmed EYP earlier this year so I'm trying to be proactive with this situation. As best as I can tell, the shell looked...
In general I know these prevention strps. My chickens free range all day, are offered quality layer feed and oyster shell. They are give very little treats. I feel like I have a decent handle on the basic nutritional situation. That being said, it's clear that she probably needs more calcium...
last night while locking my chickens in the coop I noticed that one of them laid a soft-shelled egg off the roost. I was able to determine which chicken it was because my Brahma had a small trail of yolk coming out of her vent and the broken egg was under her. It is unclear whether the egg broke...
Final Update: Upon necropsy we have what we believe to be a solid diagnosis of Egg Yolk Peritonitis. I was very surprised to find out that she had no visible tumors or masses, despite what seemed like so many Marek's-like symptoms. My vet friend found that she had a lot of yolk in the...
Thank you all for the input. Her condition progressed quickly downhill today and we decided to put her down tonight. She was obviously suffering. It was sad but she let us know it was time so we had to listen.
The paralysis continued to get worse, and the symptoms became more like Marek's, in...
Update: a cat/dog vet friend and I tried to drain the chicken's abdomen. We tried several different gauges of needles but were not able to draw any fluid out of the bird. We did get some thick red blood like substance that we will put under a microscope tomorrow.
Symptom wise the paralysis...
UPDATE: I am starting to lean towards a Mareks related issue. I definitely think she is not eggbound.
Reasons for thinking she is not eggbound:
no egg felt on internal inspection
she is pooping, although not normally
she is eating and drinking
reasons for thinking it is Marek's
limping has...
I have reposted this thread in the emergency forum, where I intended to post it initially. If a moderator wants to delete this thread that is OK. I'd do it myself but I can't figure out how.
Sorry, this is a duplicate post as I accidentally posted this in another forum section. It is more appropriate here.
I have a hen approximately two years old who is behaving strangely. She spent most of the day yesterday in the nesting box sitting on a few eggs. I suspected she was broody, but...
I have a hen approximately two years old who is behaving strangely. She spent most of the day yesterday in the nesting box sitting on a few eggs. I suspected she was broody, but her attitude was not exactly that of a broody hen. I do not have any roosters in the flock. Today I came home from...
UPDATE: I decided to separate the older chicks from the younger ones with a little ring of hardware cloth inside the brooder. I plan to keep them separated for a week or so. So far they seem to have very little interest in each other so I don't anticipate any issues whatsoever. I'll post a photo...
