    What is this?

I don't know if this helps. It looks gray to the naked eye but is red when photographed and zoomed in. Thanks for trying.

    What is this?

I need help identifying this bug. It is in the coop and I think some of them got on my hair when I cleaned it. I found 2 on my hair the other day. I keep finding one on my body everyday. When they crawl on your skin you can definitely feel it. But it is so small and gray. It does move very fast...

    Chicken First Aid Kit

I don't have a kit. My chickens don't suffer from the same ailments twice. One time one of my chickens choked and I had to swing her to dislodge it. No tools needed there. I would keep antibiotics for egg yolk peritonitis but they expire so I don't purchase one unless I think it could help. Cat...

HELP - CA Chicken Turning Head - What kind of vitamins and Electrolytes?

Hope you have made some progress with giving her some vitamins or just vitamin E. I have silkies and they require vitamins. I normally just mix in 4-5 drops of Poly Vi Sol children vitamin in with yogurt or cottage cheese to make the vitamin easier to eat. I hope you have separated her from the...

New to raising chickens in Southern California

Welcome! That looks like a good amount of space for 4 hens. It is good that you have a roof, hawks and cats could get in otherwise. But the grass will be gone in a few weeks and growing grass in the run while the hens are inside is not a good idea. They will eat the seeds or scatter them or if...

    Free Polish Rooster

Hi Fluffychicken7, if you post a good picture of the rooster that would help people decide. Also you can call your local pet store to see if they rehome roosters. Good luck.

    Runny poo

I'd give them some yogurt to add some good bacteria to her gut. This will take a day or two to see result. One of my silkie chick had a slight red tint to her poo and after I gave them all yogurt, no more red in their poo. When I want to dose my silkies with vitamins I add mesh to yogurt and...

    Baby Chickadees

Hi everyone, I am new to raising chickens and currently I have 5 hens in Los Angeles, CA. They are all 2 years old now and I will post their current photos. The gray one in the picture below, Tika, passed away due to heat stroke during last summer heat wave in LA. Recently I have started feeding...

Will washing/bathing my chickens monthly keep mites/lice away?

Thanks for the tips! I try not to wash them that often and look up on that ivermectrin stuff. I live in Los Angeles, so no such thing as feed store for farm animals. We have wild birds and wild squirrels that comes and go so I don't want to have mites problem on top of having a sick chicken. One...

    my chickens hate treats!

My chicks are the opposite, they expect treats all the time! They love yogurt and today they had tofu. Also they love pecking at corn on the cob with or without BBQ sauce and they like to eat cooked rice. They love whole grain cracker crushed into small pieces. For hard treats like cheerios and...

Will washing/bathing my chickens monthly keep mites/lice away?

I have 3, 4 mo. old bantam hens and 3, 3 mo. old bantam hens that are more house pets than anything else. When I let them out in the yard and they have their fun with dirt, I wash them afterwards with baby shampoo. I blow dry them with a hair dryer as well. This can't hurt them right? Also, will...

    Hewettas Bath Time

She is beautiful. I am glad I am not the only one who insist on given their chickens baths and blow drying them afterward.

Need some advice on a congested chick

Hey, I am in LA too! I ordered my meds from Jeffers Livestock supply store. Get some aureomycin and mix it in water. I added a pinch of aureomycin to a spoonful of water, I'd follow manufacturer's direction if my chickens drink more water but they don't. Dip her beak in it and she should start...

    Treating chicken with cold/flu symptoms?

If she was my chicken I would give her aureomycin to prevent respiratory infection and keep her around heat lamp. Give her clean water, food with vitamin, and some yogurt. Every now and then I wipe off her nostrils with tissue. And then I'd pray that she will fight it off.
