    dead baby chick? :(

Last year I bought 2 Barred Rock and 2 Dom's. They did great and are producing well. This year I wanted to change things up ... so I bought 2 Delaware and 2 Amercauna . They were being kept in a Rubbermade tote, the same as I did last year. Last night (they would be approximately 3-4 days old as...

I do I retrain pooping hens!?

I have 4 hens (2 Barred Rock and 2 Dom's). They will be a full year old in May this year, they took FOREVER to begin laying (I think they were a full 26-28 weeks before we began to get eggs. They are now good little layers! We do supplement light in the "run" area as they are fully enclosed (too...

my family wont eat "home grown" eggs........

So I have 4 hens (only 3 so far are laying) and my kids are freaked out with the "idea" of eating "home grown" eggs... my oldest son's 19th birthday was yesterday and he wanted a big birthday breakfast and his ONE request was to make the eggs from store bought eggs... we have a large family (6...

difference between mash, pellets, and scratch?

I've read some people offer scratch in the evenings on exceptionally cold evenings/nights to help "hold the hens over"... does scratch some how "warm up" the hens?

difference between mash, pellets, and scratch?

I'm new to chickens... I have 2 barred rocks and 2 Dom's that are 30 weeks, only one is laying so far??? And only started last week (I've had 5 eggs total)... I get their feed from a local farm supply store. When they were chicks, they were on a mash (that the guy at the feed store told us to...

    Offering grit?

Thanks all... I'm in the western part of the Rocky Mtn's and there is granite all around! (when I first moved here, we laughed that we finally knew why it was called "the ROCKY Mtn's! Rocks the size of human heads in the ground every!) Last time I was at the feed store (buying oyster shells) I...

    Offering grit?

It's about 4.5' x 5' square area (there is also a covered dirt run area that is about 3'x4.5' square area) the soil is mostly Sandy, loose, some pebbles... I don't know how to describe it? I have noticed in the corners they are digging, scratching, pecking and I've had to replace dirt there...

    Offering grit?

I have 29.5 week chickens, 2 Dom's and 2 barred rocks.... only 1 so far is producing eggs. They have an open air enclosed run area. It is diet with some pine shavings/bedding to minimize muddy mess! I'm wondering if the dirt on the ground is sufficient for "grit"?

24 week Dom's and barred rocks

Just wanted to update anyone who replied to me... we got our first egg yesterday! It wasn't there early in the morning before work but was there by evening. I've already checked this morning and no eggs yet, so I'm thinking supplemental lighting will be more important than I originally...

super new here and have a bunch of questions

yes! Just one egg, but nestled in the soft bedding of the larger pink plastic container! I checked in the morning before I went to work.... no egg! But in the evening it was there! So I'm thinking she laid it later in the morning once the sub was fully up. I checked this morning also and no eggs...

super new here and have a bunch of questions

OK so I took a bunch of pics over the weekend... unfortunately... I don't know how to put them in order? So I'll do my best to try to explain each. This is the access door behind one of my "upcycled" nesting boxes (an old milk crate) This is how we can harvest eggs. This is the...

super new here and have a bunch of questions

@Ridgerunner thank you! Lots of great info. I'm in the salt lake valley in Utah. Average snow fall begins mid Nov and continues to march? Average temps then I'll say are mid 30's with nights dropping to teens mostly but some single digits. Today is my day off from work and I'm gonna work a...
