    Spring 2017 first timers post!

Oliver! He's going to be a big dude, esp since he's only 14 weeks old right now and seriously into mating with the older gals, against their will I might add! A few more of the ladies and their man: The coop and run (run to the doubled by the end of the year):

    Spring 2017 first timers post!

Wow, I've been gone a long time! :frowWe've gotten 5 eggs from our Speckled Sussex (Dot) so far, starting at almost 18 weeks old! We finally were able to build a run attached to the coop, even though it's just 10 ft long for now, eventually 20ft. And one of our olive eggers is a ROOSTER! :eek...

    Resting and chilling before freezing

Hi! I have my 8 meaties back from the processor (processed this afternoon and then refrigerated until I arrived at 6pm, and deposited into my cooler of ice). Am I right that they need to sit chilled for a couple of days to relax the muscle fibers in order to have more tender meat? I don't...

    Spring 2017 first timers post!

That's the plan! I have to kind of estimate when they'll be ready because I have to book the processor two weeks in advance. They are HUGE already though. About 3lb. These are the only my photos I have that sort of show the size difference from the past few days.

They are meaties! They are also 5.5 weeks old!! The size difference is astounding! They're about 3x the size of my biggest 5.5 WK old layer, my Easter Egger!

5.5 week old Cornish X - feed options?

They should go through that whole bag of feed before DDay, so I don't mind grabbing that today. And if they don't I'll mix bits in with the other chick feed each time I fill the feeder until it's gone, so that's not a worry! If they finish it before then, then I'll just finish them on started...

    7weeks baby chicks

Dry rice isn't actually good for them. I highly recommend chick feed and if you supplement you can choose nutritious options, those could even be safe (non toxic for chickens) weeds!

    Spring 2017 first timers post!

I had to assemble a FAST pen for the 5 week old layers today. I found Amelia limping (Silver Gray Dorking) and though it doesn't appear anything is broken and nothing is bleeding, I didn't want to risk her staying with the huge broiler chickens another night. So all 7 of that group of layers are...

5.5 week old Cornish X - feed options?

I have 5.5 and 1.5 week old layers that I'll keep using the starter / grower on, so that's no worry. But thanks, I'll grab the broiler feed while I'm out today!

5.5 week old Cornish X - feed options?

I have had my Cornish X birds (8 total) on the Nutrena Nature Wise Start/Grower at 18% protein since the day they arrived, as they shared a pen with the layers that they arrived with. Today the layers were moved to their own pen and so for their last 2.5 weeks or so... Do I keep these meaties...

Chick not feathering out- Should I be worried?

Sorry, yes I purchased them and they were shipped same day from Meyer, so they're all the same age. Okay thanks! I was just so worried that it would be the same issue all over again, only this time with one we've already named and fallen for in a big way thanks to her personality!
