Temperature differences when using an egg turner

Hi, y'all, We have a hovabator genesis and an egg turner. Thing is, when our thermometers are on the floor of the incubator get a very close reading to the hovabator built in thermometer. When the thermometer is on the egg turner it reads a couple of degrees higher. Does this matter? Should...

What's the longest you would keep a chick in incubator

Hey, y'all, we've had six chicks hatch so far, and we have eight left unhatched. They were set on Wednesday night February 21, so I think today is Day 22 (I'm not super clear on how you count the days), but I was expecting a draggy hatch because the development looked a bit slow when we were...

I'm worried because I jostled the incubator

Hey, all, I guess I need reassurance, or perhaps condolences. It's post-lockdown Day 20ish and this morning I accidentally jostled the incubator and eggs were rolling everywhere (inside the incubator). Doom and gloom? Or will it be okay? Anyone else have a similar experience? Heart, Thomas

How many eggs should I let her lay before I realize she will not go broody

Oh okay. I read somewhere else about Marans, I didn't realize it was a town name. The plural should be Maranses then :) I did just order an incubator, so this will be back up because I'm pretty sure the eggs are fertilized....

How many eggs should I let her lay before I realize she will not go broody

I have been letting eggs accumulate in the nest box, the one my splash Maran uses. It was twelve as of yesterday, with a few non Maran eggs I put in there on days she did not lay an egg. At one point do I realize that she isn't going to sit on those eggs at all. thirteen? fifteen? Now...

Please advise on hatching first eggs!!!

Hey, Amy, Thank you for the advice! Yeah we are away for a while, but when we get back I will definitely check the eggs for fertility unless momma has gone broody. About the run, I am not 100%, just because of past experience, but it is certainly hawk proof because they were picking the girls...

Please advise on hatching first eggs!!!

Hey, y'all, I've had a couple different flocks of hens so I have the eggs for food thing down. This time around we ended up with a couple of roosters, so we thought we might try to hatch some eggs. One of the girls laid the first couple of eggs in the past few days. It's probably our...

    Waterboy waterer

I just wanted to mention that this works for chickens. A re-purposed spill proof water bowl for dogs. It's a bit up off the floor, but so far they don't seem that interested in perching on it, so bedding contamination is less, but I still had to clean it out some this morning. My long term...
