Thank you for the information. She is going to be very displeased with me later lol. I will spray the antiseptic on a paper towel first and rub it on. Kind of a small target for a spray.
The title states it all, I will try and get photos here in a few.
My Barred Rock hen has a scab on her earlobe. The injury itself looks like a chunk was taken/pecked out. The scab is dry and does not look infected or nasty. Are these injuries more common to fighting or could she have scratched...
If I can catch her in the act I will definitely take one. I am currently building a coop for them so I am sure the hen will have plenty of opportunities to go after the dog.
Yep. No sickle tail feathers and Cackle Hatchery claims they are pullets.
I think she may be the dominant hen, she chooks the most and is usually the one to let me know when a cat is around. It is hilarious to watch her run-up to kids or the dog and get all puffed up like she is trying to...
Anyone else experience their chickens chasing their dog? I have two Barred Rock's, two Cinnamon Queens, and one EE all about 5 1/2 months old. Within the past week, one of my Barred Rock's has decided she does not like my dog. Eris (the dog) is not exactly small and the hen will run from across...
Ok, thank you for the information. From what I have gathered the chickens will pick up small stones/grit as they please. Have you noticed any benefits to doing a weekly grit toss?
Ok, thank you for the information and yes I am thoroughly enjoying this site and forum. I have two barred rocks, all the chicks were bought from a farming store that claimed they were all pullets. They gave me a copy of the receipt from "Cackle Hatchery" which says they are all pullets/female as...
Hello all,
I am back with more questions. First a few photos from today, I know they are all the same age and am curious, do they still need the brooder light? Nighttime is mid to low 70's here and when I see them sleeping they are spread out and usually a little fluffed out like they are hot...
To the search function I go then. Yeah I have coyotes and local cats, coons, and hawks. The coop will be within sightline of a window of mine and I am damn accurate with my .22 so I am not overly concerned. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure though.
I have been refilling their bowls daily. They scratch a lot out bet then go about grazing whenever they want. I have two or three that are starting to roost on a stick I put in there, which is cool. Today I also noticed one of the Cinnamon Queens looks to be getting adult feathers on her...
I did a bit of a temp check and here are the brooder temps: right side behind the light 88f, center under light 91f-93f, left side where they sleep right around 89f.
Side note: Why are these little girls obsessed with throwing 90% of their food out of the bowls...(sarcasm/joke) I know they are...
I have two photos uploaded in one of my prior replies. The dead center where the light is pointed sits between 91-93f now that I have been using the fan to regulate temps and fresh air. They hang out anywhere but the middle. It is a long pen so I figure there is a decent heat gradient...
I figured the setup would allow for decent fresh air and heat control. They were sleeping but the moment I got near they all got up and started running around.
I am not entirely worried about the heat so much as I am about the stagnant air. The room I have the brooder in is stuffy. I have the fan pointed at the door so that only some fresh air comes into them. In a sense, I am just trying to increase the circulation of the air in the room without...
