    Air cell opposite of pip..Advice?

Just an update as we all learn from each other here. Something was inherently wrong with this egg...from the air cell not forming properly to the chick just not showing any vigor. As the membrane that I original punctured began to dry, I gently found the beak and uncovered it so the chick could...

    Air cell opposite of pip..Advice?

I'd say about 18 hrs before I did a little something. This morning the broken piece of the shell was off but the membrane was intact and while still white, forming around the shape of the chick. I checked for signs of life and it was alive...not vigorous but its chirping faintly. At about 20 hrs...

    Air cell opposite of pip..Advice?

Hi! Ok so the egg in question has its air cell on the side...not at all sure why but that's where it ended up. Its day 27 and the guinea chick inside has pipped on the opposite side of the shell. I do not know if it pipped all the way through and can breath because I can only see the shell...

How to rehome adult Muscovy ducks?

Hi folks. I can't find the specific answer that I'm looking for so I thought I'd post here :) It's been years since I had Muscovy ducks and when I got them, it was late winter so the situation is different - the Muscovys stayed in their area inside the barn so they had months to learn where home...

Adding Guinea Fowl to an Established Chicken flock

This is great to read. I have the space to house and brood separately so I might make guineas my 2022 project. This year feels too busy already for taking on a new species and being able to deal with any problems that "may" arise. Again, my biggest concern is that they will offset the...

Adding Guinea Fowl to an Established Chicken flock

Hi! I'm responding to your comment specifically but I'm grateful for everyone that's chimed in with experience and advice. In many ways posting my inquiry here has opened my eyes beyond what my research provided me with. I've concluded that I may be risking too much by introducing guineas to my...

Adding Guinea Fowl to an Established Chicken flock

Oh this is great info. Ok so my takeaway from this is is that its good to raise keets and chicks together but to house separately and keep an eye out on the range during breeding season. I suppose if the guineas become too much for the chickens, there's always a solution. I guess I'll start by...

Adding Guinea Fowl to an Established Chicken flock

Hi! Ok so here goes...someone has to have tried this :) I have a mature free range chicken flock with two resident roos. This year I want to give guineas a try for tick control etc etc. Online is full of both yay and naysayers for keeping guineas and chickens together but from what I can tell...

Problem: RIR chicks swarmed/pecked by all others

Just thought I'd follow up to conclude. The divider tactic worked. Took about a day for the other chicks to lose interest in their reddish brown beaks and finally the RIR chicks can drink and eat in peace. All good :)

Problem: RIR chicks swarmed/pecked by all others

These are food pecks. Like there's something to eat on their beaks. The RIRs respond by chirping loudly and try to run away but they're literally surrounded, overwhelmed and pursued no matter where they go. Picture a RIR chick in the middle of a hexagon of other chicks surrounding it trying to...

Problem: RIR chicks swarmed/pecked by all others

Yeah I'll keep trying...I'll try with a divider...let the mingle without contact. The RIRs are the minority in there so the attention is pretty focused. I have a few more that hatched, so once they're spry enough, adding them might help distribute the abuse to manageable levels per chick. We'll...

Problem: RIR chicks swarmed/pecked by all others

Yeah A divider never occurred to me. I think I'll give that a try. Actually a great idea and super obvious/simple. Thanks! For heat I'm using brooder hen heating plates (the kind they go under when they need to warm up). Brooder is in the house for winter so the ambient temp is a solid 18-21...

Problem: RIR chicks swarmed/pecked by all others

Yes, the 4 day olds are the problem...they are all the same age however. The brooder they are in is 6 feet in diameter. Not over crowded. Plenty of food and water. The breeds in there are SLW, BO, Colombian Rock, Hedemora and Silverrudd Blue (and crosses of some of the aforementioned. The RIRs...

Problem: RIR chicks swarmed/pecked by all others

Hi all! Ok so I'm not new to raising chicks but I'm new to RIRs and I just hatched out 8 of the little guys and gals. I have a huge two-stage brooder...one part for 1-3 day olds (until they're spry) and another for 4 days and up. I have more RIRs in the incubator and I'm really hoping to have...

NOT FOR THE SQUEAMISH - Need Advice with Potential Assisted Hatch

Ok good so you can tell by what you see that it needs more time. That's what I thought and I'm so glad I stopped...wow...it'll be 40+ hours by the time its is hatched. I'll put some oil on the membrane like you said. I've also had the humidity set a little higher to try and keep things loose...
