Does anyone know how this chicken died?

i am not sure....but it could be sudden death syndrome. It is more common in broiler chickens since they grow so fast but it happens to all chickens. Usually SDS, just happen so quickly in healthy looking birds with no real explanation.

    The downside to free range

Free range is great but i would recommend you make a 10x10 movable cage They are essentially caged but i move they everyday to another location. so they are kind of caged/free range chickens.
