    Dead large black brahma hen

I am too much of a softie to kill something. I even live trapped a mouse at work years ago. If it did not create bad habits for the predator I would have rather it finish eating the chickens rather than throwing them in the garbage. I know some will think me nutty.

    Dead large black brahma hen

Yes. I think we will do some tweaking of our run once the ground thaws. Thank you very much for your suggestions. Ya. I know. I will not trap it. It sure would be nice to know what it really is though.

    Dead large black brahma hen

Oops. I should have said run door closed and small door from coop to run open. No the hen was not left out, but evidence of commotion in the coop points to an intruder inside the coop. I spoke with a biologist from forestry and wildlife management and he suggested a marten or fisher weasel...

    Dead large black brahma hen

Hi everyone . My hens are nearly 2 years old. They free range all day, but this is the first predatory death. I should note that our dog passed away last May, so i am guessing all traces of her smells are now gone from the yard and the snow just recently melted, so the hens are out more. I...

    egg laying drop in spring

Hi there. I have a mixed flock of 8 hens. They are just shy of 10 months old and have been laying for 4 to 5 months. Our winter temperatures were pretty mild this year minus 5 to 10 C. I supplimented their light as well. The teperatures are warming up and days are longer now that it is...

    My very first eggs :)

I started with 7 chicks at the end of May. 3 ended up to be roosters - 1 went to a farm in August; the last 2 are heading to a farm tomorrow. We bought two more pullets in the Fall to replace the roos. The hens are now about 20 weeks old and the recent additions are about 24 weeks old. We...

    Are these 2 both roosters?

Hi everyone. I have 3 lavender orpington chickens that are 15 weeks old now. One is a girl for sure, but these 2 that I am posting pics of, I am not positive (new to this). Thanks for the help. :) Jacquie

Can you tell what gender these are?

Hi again. I posted pics of my young chicks, but they had some growing to do before their genders became clear. They are now between 6 and 7 weeks old and I thought I'd try again. We've named them all girl names to be on the optimistic side, but I think there may be quite a few boys now. Let...

Thanks everyone! I'll try and be a bit more patient then and wait for mother nature to reveal more clues. Jacquie

first time chicken owner - any guesses on genders?

Hi there we have been raising 7 chicks for the past 2.5 weeks. three 20 day old lavender orps, one 20 day old cream legbar (she's a girl), two ameracaunas/easter eggers who are 26 days old, and one 26 day old white mixed breed. I think one of the easter eggers is a roo. I have mixed ideas...
