I am going to cull him. When I "rescued" him, I was told there were 4 hens. When I got there I saw there were 2 hens and 2 roos. I took them because I said I would. I have culled roos before but they were free range that I raised myself.
I acquired a roo from a friend. She was not a chicken person but got some chicks for her kids for Easter and didn't want them any more. I got them about two months ago and they are almost 6 months old now. They were kept in a small coop and this large fat red sexlink roo couldn't stand up...
I have a Buff Orpington that is 16 months old and has never laid an egg. She pretends to, she goes through the motions. She sits on a nest every day for an hour or 2 and never lays. She is very sweet and I wonder if maybe she will go broody one day and sit on everyone elses eggs for me. But at...
I have 3 RIR's that lay almost every day, 1 black Australorp that lays almost every day, and 3 Buff Orpingtons that lay almost every day. Then there is the one Buff Orpington that sits in the nesting box for about an hour each day, and never lays an egg. She has never laid as far as I know...
I was worried about that. I wanted more egg layers. It's my own fault for getting unlabeled chicks. I also got 3 straight run barred rocks, and I am pretty sure there are at least 3 pullets. I don't mind eating a few of the 15 we have though.

#2 These first 3 pics are all the same chick. There are two of these, they are double the size of all the others but they are the same age, 2 weeks old.

#4 OK, this one is supposed to be a hen but look at that comb! Any idea what breed?
#5 There are two of these as well.

I would love an egg skelter but this works well. Its a metal fruit bowl sitting on top of a deviled egg plate :) I so love fresh eggs! I just wish the girls would all lay in the same place every time so I can find all of the eggs! That's what I get for free ranging I guess.
It has been raining almost constantly for the past 36 hours here and this morning I found an egg in a mud puddle outside. I am not sure how long its been there. Do you think its OK to just wash it off and eat it? or could yucky stuff soak in through the shell and make it bad?
One of my buffs is laying now. I got 5 eggs last week! I hope the other three start laying soon! They are all from the same batch and are all going to be 30 weeks tomorrow.
