JaSoN's Chicken Plantation
I am completely new to the whole chicken thing, so I found this site to be the most informative on the internet. I remember as a child, my grandmother having chickens on her farm which she raised for meat and eggs. A lot of vivid memories I have playing with those...
Just wanted to be sure, but based on everything I have read, it does sound as though she may be broody. Unfortunately we don't want any baby chicks right now and it is bad timing for her to go broody. I guess what I am gathering is going broody means that she is doing as her maternal instinct...
I have a Plymouth Rock hen that I have had since March as a bittie. I also have 2 other chickens, both hens, same ages, one is a White Rock and one is a RIR. They have been laying eggs for a few months now and are about 9 months old. I have a nice 10x10 coop and I have a fenced in back yard...
The reason I didnt get the oyster shell is because I was told that if their eggs were coming out fine, don't worry about it. Sorry, but just want to make sure everything is right. I will offer some oyster shell in a bowl too.
Okay, alot of good responses here, but I see there are obviously a lot of different opinions. I was told by an older gentleman that if you wanted them to continue laying you had to feed laying pellets or laying mash. That brings me to my next question. What is the difference between the...
Yes, that would work only if you suspended it on both sides from the handles. Do not drill into the lid or hang from the lid. It will overfill with water and just keep pouring out if the cap is not airtight. Just make sure however you suspend it, both sides are equal and I would suggest rope...
I just added a few more roosts in mine. Decided to give them something a little higher. The tallest is about 8'. My coop if about 8 x 8 or so and about 8 ft tall. There is a ladder that takes them to the first leg of the roosts which is about 4 ft tall. After that, its on them. The first...
Oh yeah, and the grow and feed is not medicated. It is the Purina kind in a bright yellow bag I think. I am just trying to figure out if I can one bag of feed specifically or if I still need to buy 3. Sounds like the scratch and layer is a common thing and I need to discard the grow and feed.
Sorry, forgot in the original post, but all 3 are hens. So I am assuming the suggestion is to put some oyster shell in either way even though there is no problem. Do I mix this in with the food or put it somewhere seperate. I will have to find the flock raiser. The only thing at my local...
I bought the 1 gallon hanging waterer and hangine feeder from Tractor Supply about 2 weeks ago and love them. Of course, I hung them about a foot or so off the ground and they have worked great. A lot less waste on the food and mine do not get on top. I guess the hanging part is what...
Okay, so I am going to ask a question that has probably been asked before, but I am unable to find any posts pertaining to it. I have 3 chickens, guessing about 16 to 18 weeks old. One RIR, one barred rock, and one white rock. My RIR started laying about 2 weeks ago and my barred rock has...
Need some help figuring out what breed these bitties are? I got them yesterday and have no idea what they are and neither did the guy I got them from. My wife thought they were cute, so we had to have them. Any help or guesses are appreciated.
Okay, just going to find her (him) a new home. Last time I sent out the pics, you all were right and I got really close and attached and had to get rid of him, so better now than later. Thanks.
Okay, just picked this Brahma up today, obviously the one up front in the pics, and wondering if it appears to be a hen or rooster? The gentleman I got her from said he was uncertain and it was a little hard to tell with the Brahmas. I got a a golden laced wyandotte from him last year around...
Wow, just checked the thread and I can't believe there has been so many views. I guess what I wanted to see, alot of others wanted to see too. I have gotten some great ideas from your pictures and hope to post some of my own soon. Keep them coming!
