I collect eggs once a day in late afternoon. The girls don’t like to be disturbed while laying. I keep a few baskets by the back door to the barn. I do other chores in the barn and know I would end up with scrambled eggs if I put them in pockets! I pad the basket bottoms with a couple rags...
The holistic hen site had a lot of good information. I tried melting coconut oil and applying it to the white areas. The chick promptly started having seizures. Hopefully it helps. It took her a while to come around. I don’t know if it was worth all the stress to her. She is probably one that...
Our eight week old buff chick in the photos has a crusty scaly white all over its head. She has been different from the other four that hatched with her right from the start. She was much bigger than the rest, having the look and gait of a meat bird, even though we don’t have any in our flock...
Why would a hen occasionally lay an egg with just the membrane or with a very soft shell? When does the shell form?
My husband found this egg this morning, partially covered with a thin shell and part just membrane. It happens occasionally with our 30+ hens.
The screen tent works well and is easy to move. It is vulnerable to strong winds though and must be staked down very well after moving. There was no damage to the grass as long as we moved the tent frequently. It was attached to a wooden chicken tractor, where they roosted at night, so other...
This is our barred rock Onesie, taken today, who probably looks worse than she really is. She lost a wing to a raccoon when she was young. The red skin is sunburn from this summer. She can't seem to grow the feathers back, probably due to over zealous roosters.
All other breeds
Brahmas make wonderful pets and that is good because you need to handle them often to check their feet. Gunk can get caught in their feathers on their feet and can cripple a chicken if not kept clean. You would notice a problem right away if the chicken was a pet.
My husband, son and I are learning all over again. We purchased 33 two to three week old meat birds this spring. We ended up with 29 in the freezer. They look like small turkeys.
We also purchased day old chicks, mostly barred rocks, a silver and golden laced Wyandotte, welsummers...
This rooster was accidentally put in with the pullet chicks when we bought them this spring. I am beginning to think he is a mixed breed, since I have been unable to find any images that look like him on breed charts.
He has a black cape, white body with black spots and a few rust spots, dark...
