    Itching Chickens.

My first time around with Orpingtons, they act the same, they preen a lot and dust bathe. Haven't spotted any nasties as yet.

I have chickens that are eating the eggs. Why and how to stop.

In my humble experience once the chickens taste a raw egg it's almost impossible to stop this. It can become a habit after the first taste. I tried collecting them early & even watch them lay. They would lay & spin around so fast to peck the egg, it was impossible to stop them. I tried all the...

Dust bath area and proper ground care?

I believe a lot of people use a mixture of wood ash, sand & DE over here in Australia. My dilemma was how to keep it dry in winter. I think chickens usually prefer to dust bath in the sun when possible.

    Fermenting chicken feed, Good idea?

I have been fermenting my commercial chicken crumble 17% protein, after reading many articles. Very small flock of Isa Brown hens. I have found that it is fermenting very fast. Around 24hrs, I'm assuming it's because its the start of our summer (South Australia) and I haven't had a cool enough...

Our hen attacked my two young kids

Maybe you could provide your children with some clear plastic eye protection and teach them to walk with their arms spread wide and high (intimidation tactic) near the chickens/chook. Hope this doesn't sound silly. Cheers from OZ.

Thanks again for your thoughts. Can aspergillosis in chickens be treated successfully? Its possible she has picked up something nasty as she came from an aweful environment. cheers

    unwell hen for 6months

Hi Eggcessive My Lazarus hen is doing ok but I have noticed her voice changing again. After the anti fungal medication she went from being silent to sounding like a goose, (honking). Im just curious what you think could be going on, she now squeaks a little, no other noises. I dont know much...

    unwell hen for 6months

Thank you so much "Eggcessive" for your advice about my hen Lazzarus who had been unwell for 6mths. I wanted to let you know that your suggestion of chronic digestive tract yeast infection seemed to be correct. I treated her with Nilstat drops which you can buy here without a prescription. She...

Hens eating eggs! Running of out ideas!

Believe it or not my hens worked out the white golf ball thing. I have painted them to look more like eggs. I found a hard fake rubber egg, very realistic and this worked better.

    Hens Eating Eggs. Help!

I had to paint my white golfballs to look more like eggs. I also found a hard rubber fake egg, very realistic, this helped. I also feed my hens as early as possible before they lay, it seems to help if they are not hungry. They have access to dry layer pellets but I soak some in water and I give...

    unwell hen for 6months

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to my post. I will investigate which antifungals are available non prescription in Australia. Perhaps probiotics too. Its all worth a try. I also had a thought that maybe she could be anaemic post heavy mite infection so I might try to find out how...

    unwell hen for 6months

Hi everyone. Thank you for your contributions to this site. I live in the foothills of Adelaide, South Australia. I rescued 4 Isa Brown Hens 6months ago. They had a dirt floor iron shed plus a large grassed run to free range during the day. One hen was taken by a fox. I have moved the rest close...

Chicken not right, but don't know what's wrong!

I had a similar issue with one of my hens. She was close to death. They came from a friend recently and are about 3 years old. I thought the hen would die but perked up after syringe feeding water/softened pellets. It turned out she had a mite/lice infestation. Once I treated her with a dusting...
