Yoghurt with oats mixed in - they go CRAZY for it.
Chicken, or bread soaked with the fatty juices left in the roasting pan after roasting a chicken.
Pork fat (cut off a chop) cut into little pieces = feeding frenzy.
I get moaned at good and loud if I give them roasted vegetables. They radiate...
Your feeder looks great! We have a real problem with sparrows. We have a metal version similar to yours, and the sparrows jump in while the chickens are feeding, then get trapped in there when the chickens step away and the lid closes. I don't know what to do about them - they stay in there...
I'm a little frustrated with our beautiful gold laced Barnevelder, Marble. She started laying in the middle of July 2013 and since then she has been broody 5 times! The third time we got her a couple of fertile eggs to hatch. She was just a great mommy and everything went well. But we can't do...
Thanks. The only predators we have to worry about are occasional hawks (although I've never seen one) and random neighbourhood dogs (we are in the process of building a fence, although we are renting).
We have four hens, and two baby chicks. We knew our old coop wouldn't be sufficient for 6 chickens so I designed this new coop and DH and I built it. We're very proud of it
Pictures and details are on my blog.
We've made four modifications so far:
1) stapled wire mesh inside the window so...
Just wanted to check in with an update: while we were trying to work out what was up with her, and talking about taking her to the vet, she began rapidly improving and is now well and has started laying too! We checked her mouth and she seems to have healed nicely. The poultry dealer (from...
Thanks so much for taking the time to answer. We have had a good look in her mouth and throat (she was not happy!) and it all looks beautifully healthy. Will check her crop in the morning - I don't exactly know how, do I just feel her throat for any bulges?? The lice was taken care of with a...
LOL I lived in South Africa for my first 24 years, then England for the next 11 and now New Zealand - and in each of these countries eggs are sold unrefrigerated, off the shelf, so I have no qualms leaving my hens' fresh unwashed eggs out!
Hi all. I am new to posting but have been a reader for a while. We have 4 hens, but only 3 are laying. Anyway, I wanted a way of rotating the eggs and came up with this device which I thought I'd share here. I started with two white metal poles. These (and more of the same) were salvaged from...
Hi all. Sorry for my first post being a negative one! I have a question about one of our 4 chickens. She is a white Wyandotte, who is 9 months old (and still not laying). In July she became very lethargic and the absolute picture of misery. She'd hunch down, standing separately from the other 3...
